French term

conduite élargie

French to English Bus/Financial Insurance
Insurance report:

"Dans le cadre de l'activité d'enseignement de la conduite élargie, dispensée par la société XXX, le 7 mars 2017, Monsieur YYY s'est rendu sur le circuit automobile ZZZ"

Here's a good explanation of the term:
https://www.assurancesclavel.com/faq-2/quelle-assurance-choi...

There is presumably an English equivalent in insurance: car insurance where occasional loans to people not named in the insurance contract are permitted. I find it slightly odd that there is this notion of *teaching* la conduite élargie.

Discussion

Suzie Withers Oct 21, 2020:
Thanks for letting us know! Always good to get closure on these things! :D
Mpoma (asker) Oct 21, 2020:
In the end I put "extended driving instructor activity"... this seems to have been along the lines of what Phil Goddard was suggesting in his deleted post.
Mpoma (asker) Oct 16, 2020:
wrong parsing? bit of context... @ph-b I considered that élargie might not refer to conduite, if that's what you mean... because of the "e" at the end either this must be a typo, or refer to activité élargie. Interesting idea.

I've got a bit further now, and it turns out this session on the race track was essentially for fun, a "journée de plaisir". On the other hand, the driver is involved in the motor trade, and the person accompanying him is a moniteur de pilotage diplômé (haven't researched what that is yet).
philgoddard Oct 15, 2020:
I'm not totally convinced by your reference, ph-b. It does contain "élargissement", but the context is not the same.
Mpoma (asker) Oct 15, 2020:
Advanced driving idea Yes, this was my first thought.

Then I found that link, which combined with the context (this is a 100% insurance job) convinced me. Now I'm not sure.
Suzie Withers Oct 15, 2020:
Yes, the fact that someone turned up at a "circuit automobile" would tend to suggest that they were taking part in some advanced driving skills or racing experience perhaps?
ph-b (X) Oct 15, 2020:
philgoddard, The text I quoted supports your initial activité élargie d'enseignement de la conduite. Driving instructors need to find other tasks and élargir leur mission.
philgoddard Oct 15, 2020:
I had second thoughts about my answer and deleted it, but perhaps I shouldn't have. I said it didn't look like an insurance term.

It could mean advanced driving, or it could be that their driving school had expanded. Looking up company XXX might help. But I could be completely wrong.
ph-b (X) Oct 15, 2020:
philgoddard's discussion post seems to have disappeared. I'll agree with it if it reappears as a answer in English.
ph-b (X) Oct 15, 2020:
voiture...

@phil I also wondered that. Advanced driving skills or something... just looking myself

Named Driver or Additional Driver

neutral Suzie Withers : the asker says this is for occasional drivers who are *not* named on the policy

neutral ph-b (X) : I'm almost certain this has nothing to do with named/additional drivers.

neutral AllegroTrans : Surely driver would be "conducteur"?

advanced driving, expanded-coverage endorsement / for an un-named motorist /

BrE endorsement - rather than AmE indorsement - of the insurance policy a.k.a. a rider, rather than widening the range of a US driver's license or penalty points endorsement of a UK diriving licence.

Also the term of 'car loan' IMO is ambiguous and needs to be watched: it can refer both to lending of a motor vehicles as well as a conditional bill of sale by way of chattel mortgage, so a cash loan secured on a car and regd. in London e.g. by Yours Truly at the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand.
Example sentence:

Unnamed Driver means any person who is not named as a Named Driver in the Schedule or Certificate of Insurance but who is authorised by You to drive Your Car.

extended insurance cover

It's an insurance cover which allows more than two people to drive the same vehicle. In the information in the question, one driver took part in circuit (or race-track) driving) as part of his driver training by instruction.

"La conduite élargie permet le prêt occasionnel du véhicule à des personnes non mentionnées au contrat dane le cadre d'un usage 'privé' à condition qu'elles aient trois ans de permis au plus."

"The extended driving cover allows the occasional vehicle hiring for persons not named in the context of private usage cover on condition that they have been holding a clean license for at least three years."
Example sentence:

"Dans le cas où plus de deux personnes sont amenées à conduire votre véhicule de collection, vous pouvez souscire la conduite élargie."

"In the event of two or more persons being brought to drive the hired vehicle, they can be subscribed (added on to) the extended insurance cover."
