design-to-hit ratios

English to French Tech/Engineering Manufacturing manufacturing
By focusing on aesthetic and engineering requirements, the company improved its design-to-hit ratios, earning an Award from xxx Magazine.
Design-to-hit ratios and sample numbers are common challenges in the fashion industry.
A 45% reduction in the number of designs per hit – from eight or nine to just five – has proved achievable for one of our brands.
Reducing our design-to-hit ratios has helped us decrease cycle times.

Si je comprends bien, il s'agit du rapport entre le nombre de produits envisagés (mis en développement, avec prototypage, etc.) et le nombre de produits réellement commercialisés.
C'est un critère de rendement.

Discussion

Daryo Oct 11, 2020:
Well ... Once you have the whole text (takes about 10 secondes if you ask Google the right question) you do have a clearer picture - the concept of "design-to-hit" ratios becomes self-explanatory later in the same article:

Q: Design-to-hit ratios and sample numbers are common challenges in the fashion industry. What potential did you see to improve these?

A: We produce an average of three samples for each design, so reducing the number of designs we create before adopting one can also mean a significant reduction in sampling costs and time-to-market.

i.e. you get the exact meaning of what is a "hit" in "design-to-hit" ratios - it's a "hit" from the viewpoint of the designers - they got their design approved for production, not a "hit" from the viewpoint of the sales department - which you would be the first reasonable assumption without enough context.

Hello Daryo,
I'm not sure you are on the right track here.
First, the document is about fashion but not only.
I would also tend to say that brands/companies not always try to sell their new models, but they try to make them. And if the production is complicated or expensive or whatever, they won't even try to sell them. In such cases, the design-to-hit ratio would be bad.
But maybe I'm wrong.
Daryo Oct 9, 2020:
@ Asker Since when the fashion industry qualifies as "manufacturing"?

There is for sure a component of "mass production / production" but wouldn't the key element be (fashion) design?

Also, wouldn't "hit" be "commercialisation réussie" - as you obviously have to try to sell ALL new models before you can find out which ones are going to be "the hits"?

taux de conversion de la conception à la production

IOW what proportion of "designed" products gets to be turned into products that are going to be put in effective production for sale.

or possibly some variant with "taux d'adoption"

There are very few occurrences of "design-to-hit" so it seems to be a novel concept.

It’s been less than a year, but the benefits are unmistakable. One of the most significant is that FOSSIL now has a clear understanding of its design-to-hit ratio, and because it can measure it, is able to improve it.
For example, for one watch brand, it has improved from an eight- or nine-to-one design-to-hit rate to a five-to one design-to-hit rate. Said differently, it has reduced by about 45 percent the number of designs it creates, while increasing the percentage of designs it adopts.

Merci beaucoup Daryo. Cette proposition me semble très parlante.

neutral Daryo : it is vaguely / roughly that [if you exclude plans/projets graphiques that wouldn't work at all] - but your reference - just a Google search - proves NOTHING.
