Hi!
This is an architect speaking about his approach when hired to work on a new project:
We took it as a sort of a challenge to be a professional dum-dum, to act as a sponge, to listen, to analyze.
The options I found for "dum-dum" don't seem to match this meaning.
Thanks so much for your ideas!

simular ignorancia, profesionalmente hablando
As mentioned by Taña, the usual meanings don't really apply in the cited context. The idea trying to be conveyed would seem to be that they found it convenient, for reasons not mentioned, to downplay their professional knowledge.

I personally think you lose the nuance, but I leave it to the native Spanish speakers to chime in further (although there are proposals). Wait and see for further input! Regards and stay safe.
"Sometimes you have to play the role of a fool to fool, the fool who thinks he is fooling you."
Meaning/Explanation - We can pretend to be foolish to come out of a situation or to fool a person who is trying to fool us. BTW, the first one I gave is very well-known in my country "Play fool to catch wise", and may be quite unfamiliar to many (?).
