Rayon des Nouveautés

French to English Medical Medical (general) adverse events from imported replacement drugs
Hello

I am translating an article about shortages of medicines, in particular in relation to adverse events from incorrect administration of imported drugs.

Does this have a very particular meaning?

Discussion

philgoddard Jun 29, 2020:
Yes, something like that But it might be nice to make up something clever like the French. It partly depends on what the translation is being used for - if it's just for information, what you call this section of the website is irrelevant.
Suzie Withers Jun 29, 2020:
Other ideas "Hot off the press", "News just in" maybe?
ph-b (X) Jun 29, 2020:
It's borrowed from rayon des nouveautés in dept stores. These rayons used to display the newest thing(s) in fashion. Gén. au plur. Dernières productions de l'industrie de la mode. Nouveautés de printemps, d'hiver; le commerce des nouveautés; commis de nouveautés; catalogue de nouveautés. (CNRTL) They no longer exist as such but the term is still used for "latest developments", as Suzie says. "Just out!"/"We just heard..." kind of thing.
Suzie Withers Jun 29, 2020:
Context? It just seems to mean "new features" or "latest developments" in the contexts I've seen (which are generally about product development). Not sure if it's different for medicines. Is there any more context you can share?

New Products

Hi Liz, in Prescrire's English version, the "Rayon des Nouveautés" section of the journal is referred to as the "New Products" section. See for example https://www.prescrire.org/Fr/109/1975/58286/6285/6260/SubRep...
"Le Palmarès de l'information repose sur l'information fournie à Prescrire par les firmes pour les médicaments présentés dans le "Rayon des Nouveautés" en 2019"
and https://english.prescrire.org/en/146A0210A0351BD8A3DA480E668...
"The Information Awards are based on the quality of the information provided to Prescrire by the companies whose products we examined in 2019 in the New Products section of our French edition"
Note from asker:

agree philgoddard : Can't argue with this! Good research. If there wasn't an existing translation, "New on the shelf" might be a possibility.

New items shelve

C'est une expression empruntée au monde du commerce. Elle fait allusion au rayon "nouveautés" des magasins et l'applique à cette rubrique présentant les nouveautés en matière pharmaceutique.
C'est un effet de style.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Suzie Withers : Too literal, not an expression we would use in English // Fine - probably better as a discussion post than an answer? :)

New kid on the block

In general, "rayon des nouveautés" means "new products" (coming from the image of a display in a shop - un rayon - with all the new products). However, this is section of the review Prescrire is a bit larger than that, talking about new products, but also new indications. An expression often use for that is "new kid on the block". Two refs below, but there are many more.

disagree AllegroTrans : You wouldn;t see something as casual as this in relation to medicines

In the description there are new medicines which are in a department or section, separate from other items.
