English translation:
One map that's essential
French term
carte obligée
"D’ici, ça ne paraît pas si loin est l’histoire d’une carte. Une carte obligée, celle, administrative, de la Nouvelle-Aquitaine"
I don't understand what "obligée means here, here is more context:

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

: I think you are losing sight of the context "D’ici, ça ne paraît pas si loin est l’histoire d’une carte. Une carte obligée, celle, administrative, de la Nouvelle-Aquitaine ..." and that this is an artwork for which they used that map.

as far as I can see, it's a most literal map - that you need ("must-have") so that you can connect the photos to geographical locations. Is there something else I'm missing?

a story that must be told [rework the metaphor]
From the ST it's clear that here carte is a metaphor, perhaps one chosen in the wake of the 2015 reorganization of France's regions and the fact that the area in question only really exists on the map, being an administrative construct rather than a traditional or historic region (although the lines between the two are often blurred in France).
Of course you have to continue with the story metaphor and pretty much rework the entire first paragraph, but I'm happy to do that if the meaning and feeling of the ST is preserved and the effect achieved is the same.
[...] is a story, one that must be told and heard, about the new administrative region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, now France's largest and as big as Austria.
An open-ended story with many overlaps about identity, unity and belonging.
marginalia map

: very tenuous links to this ST + the ref. is about "marginalia" found on maps NOT about maps of "marginalia"

Discussion
Courant (en épithète) : qui est commandé par l'usage, par les faits… (Le Grand Robert de la langue française) You can't escape it, you cannot not mention it or not think of it that way. You have to see it that way because it is after all an administrative region/boundary: "Une carte obligée, celle, administrative, de la Nouvelle-Aquitaine". To be contrasted, however, with what follows: Une carte aux contours flous..., i.e. yet, it is not that clearly defined in other fields: fait-elle territoire ? Fédère-t-elle ses habitants ? Est-elle porteuse d’un récit ? (https://www.becair.com/produit/dici-ca-ne-parait-pas-si-loin...
