Tipps und Tricks

German to English Medical Medical (general) Spinal surgery in the elderly
I know what the phrase means literally, and it often appears in software instructions. Here it's a matter of register. This is a scientific article about spinal surgery, and the phrase recurs several times in the article as section headings. "Helpful hints" is the best I can come up with, but my imagination fails me at the moment.
All suggestions welcome.

Kevin Fulton (asker) Apr 7, 2019:
Time to contact the author I agree with the comments that a scientific article shouldn't have "Tipps und Tricks" as (sub) headings and am surprised that it got past the publisher's copy editor. I think a reasonable solution would be to put a relevant title for each section indicating the general content of that section.
Thanks to all who offered their help!
Steffen Walter Apr 7, 2019:
Agree with Björn Using "Tipps und Tricks" as a section heading in a scientific article strikes me as very unusual/off the mark. Perhaps combine Björn's and Lancashireman's ideas and use "Suggestions and Recommendations".
Ramey Rieger (X) Apr 7, 2019:
What you can do Would also work, but it'd be nice to know what it's about.
Björn Vrooman Apr 6, 2019:
Trick or treat I'm aghast that a German scientist would believe this to be an appropriate heading.

It'd be OK if it were a Patientenleitfaden:

@Lancashireman
What about Recommendations?

"Summary and Recommendations"
https://www.uptodate.com/contents/subacute-and-chronic-low-b...

"Review the guidelines and recommendations contained with the Musculoskeletal
Framework and implement as appropriate."
https://democracy.portsmouth.gov.uk/documents/s18921/Spinal ...

"Allgemeine Tipps und Tricks" would be, e.g., "General advice on posture"
later: "Recommendations for good sitting posture:"
https://www.thewaltoncentre.nhs.uk/uploadedfiles/leaflets/Un...

"In addition to the treatment that you receive in the clinic you may also receive additional lifestyle recommendations and exercise regimes as appropriate."
http://www.dundrumphysio.co.uk/Physiotherapy-Back-Pain.html

If I understood this correctly, it's mostly about exercise and posture.

All tips and tricks welcome: Would 'Suggestions' work? Useful ones, of course.
'Hints' sounds like it's some sort of puzzle which the writer has set the reader and which he/she already knows the answer to.

Protocols and Pointers

Just one possible idea that might slightly convey the apparently intended lighter tone as well as maintain the alliteration of the original...While a protocol or best practice is certainly not a "Tipp," a pointer is - and a protocal should be followed, so it is like an internal guideline.

Advice and useful procedures /hints and knacks

First of all I think it is totally legit to use "tips and tricks" in scientific papers if they relate to specific operation procedures / techniques that will come in handy in certain situations and ease the flow. This could even involve simple things like pre-op preparations: administering the anaesthetic in the right instead the left arm if the doc has to stand more often on one side during the operation or happens to be left-handed etc.etc. That´s why it is called tips and tricks, it can involve rather minor deviations from a protocol procedure that would appear rather meaningless from an outside perspective.
So do check what exactly that section is about and whether it makes sense.

Of course we do not talk about overriding the heart monitor or whatever dodgy stuff :))

Anyway for an alternative more formal version :
"Advice and useful procedures (or methods)"

If you wanna stay less formal : "Hints and knacks" :)))

This phrase exists in English too. You could also say hints. They've chosen a fairly colloquial term, so you can too.
