Finnish term

ulosmyynti

Finnish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
From an advertisement for a service offering sales data/analysis:

"[palvelu] tarjoaa tarjoaa apteekkien ulosmyyntidatan avulla näkyvyyden kuluttajien ostokäyttäytymiseen ja tuoteryhmien kilpailutilanteeseen."

In the context of restaurants, "ulosmyynti" seems to refer to the selling of takeout items (e.g. packaged food) in addition to food that is consumed on the premises.

But in the case of pharmacies, more or less everything is a "takeout" item (as far as I can tell), so I don't understand why the prefix "ulos-" would be necessary/meaningful.

What does "ulosmyynti" mean in the cited context?

Thanks

Discussion

Timo Lehtilä Aug 28, 2018:
It just seems that drugstores use this 'ulosmyynti' term, when referring to private customers. Maybe they use just 'myynti' term, when referring to institutional customer (hospitals, clinics, doctors...).
finnword1 Aug 27, 2018:
doesn't make sense It looks like the writer of "apteekkien ulosmyyntidata" has no clue. Ulosmyynti is commonly referring to someone buying a bottle of booze from a bar and going home to drink it. Makes no sense if referring to a pharmacy. Unless, of course, it refers to prohibition era sales of pure alcohol for "medicinal purposes".

Just noticed that "tarjoaa" was accidentally repeated in the above quotation. My mistake.

I think it's just a tautology (ulosmyynti -> myynti).

Maybe the author tries to emphasise that the data contains information of actually sold products (not just sales figures).

I meant that the sales figures are detailed by products, like Aspirin. Not just general turnover or product categories like "prescription medicines".
Note from asker:
Many thanks for your response. I still don't quite get the distinction you're drawing between "just sales figures" and "actually-sold products"?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "My only quibble is that the answer should be changed from "sales data" to "sales" -- otherwise, people who don't have time to carefully read the thread could be misled into thinking that "ulosmyynti" by itself means "sales data"."
