Spanish term

a cuestas del eclipse

Non-PRO Spanish to English Art/Literary
(discussion about la Real Academia and why governmental control of language is inherently flawed)

España le ha dado mucho al mundo el castellano, pero a cuestas del eclipse de otras lenguas peninsulares. Hoy el tema de las autonomías esta íntimamente vinculado a eclipse.

having trouble translating the first sentence, first off do you think it should el mundo DEL castellano, maybe a typo or missing a comma? and secondly, and my actual question, i´m having problems with a cuestas here... maybe i´m reading too much into the text...
any suggestions would be great.

P.S. speaker is Mexican

at the cost of OR at the expense of

1)I agree with you that it should be DEL
2) it has contributed a great deal to the Castillian-speaking world but at the expense of the other languages (on the [Iberian] Peninsula)).
That's how I read it. What has been done in upport of one language has been TO THE DETRIMENT of the others

Spain has for its own sake forfeited and eclipsed other peninsular languages

While contributing immensely to the Spanish world, Spain has for its own sake forfeited and eclipsed other peninsular languages.

This is just an option as I believe CMJ_Trans has the right translation, English should be concise.

My option has twisted all modifiers, also it is rather long yet I aimed at keeping the Mexican speaker´s
literary gist or nuance ..that of sacrifice and eclipse.
