白圆胖子

Chinese to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Fiction novel
This is in a novel about a med student living in Beijing, China. He's at a feast during Spring Festival and he doesn't know the people around him, so he uses this description. I'm completely bewildered...does white describe his shirt? Or does it describe relatively pale skin? Or is it a Chinese speaking Caucasian, who happens to work at a Chinese company that sells e-books? I assume it's not a white person but just a pale-skinned person. Google was not giving me any other examples of this expression. Note, there is a corresponding 黑圆胖子, which makes me think the main character can barely tell all these strangers apart so he calls one the pale fatty and the other the dark-skinned fatty.

Discussion

There's actually almost NO ambiguity to this specific term. Search results on Baidu will likely tell you that there's no existing saying or idiom (a similar example conjuring this type of imagery could be something such as 黑白无常,), nor is it something like 喜大普奔 which might not be self-explanatory, or allows the reader to recall its meaning immediately, but are results of popular culture/netizens' creations. I highly applaud OP's diligence and focus on accuracy in her work- that being said however, this question clearly belongs to the non-PRO category. Tanglsus sums it up well with the imagery he's providing.

I disagree with you. Firstly to non-native speakers there is ambiguity because Chinese language often has historical meaning or makes reference to famous sayings which we need to check for. Also English helpfully distinguishes between pale and white whereas Chinese does not. Michelle is a professional because she double-checks when she has a niggling doubt, instead of guessing and producing a poor product just to save face.

Why? I am not really sure why this calls for a kudoz entry save for the lack of thorough understanding of the literary prose or perhaps more specifically, of Chinese language. This clearly offers a vivid image of comparing a very tanned/dark-skinned man of heavy set, against one whose body build is the same, but who has much whiter skin. Why would this ever bring up the image of a Caucausian man?? Unless the book (presumably, it's a book we're talking about) has had previous appearances of a white guy, otherwise it is too clear that this cannot be anything other than a "pale fat guy" as other entries have suggested.

pale fatty

yes, just like your suggestion, it means "pale fatty"
and 黑圆胖子 means "dark-skinned fatty"
Peer comment(s):

agree Z-Kong : Only to add a note that in China calling someone fatty is not rude, unless the person says it in a rude way

agree Michael Lickorish : agree, except I would say fat guy instead of "fatty"

agree Phil Hand : If this is the same character, he is pretty offensive. Fatty might be fine for his voice.

fair skinned fatty

I prefer to say "fair" rather than "pale" because the latter implies a kind of sickliness which is not evident in the original text.

I'd say this is a man who doesn't get out much, hence both the light colored skin tone as well as the excessive waistline.
