German term

Deichgräber

German to English Law/Patents Construction / Civil Engineering
This is from an Austrian insurance contract. Some googling suggests that it has to do with excavation, though I can't find an exact translation. Here's the context it appear in: "...Elektroinstallateure (Elektriker), Heizungs- und Klimatechniker, Abbruchsunternehmer, Baggereien (Deichgräber), Sand- und Schottererzeuger, Spren-gungsunternehmer und Sprengmeister, Steinbruchunternehmer und Tiefbohrunternehmer."

Discussion

Yorkshireman Aug 6, 2014:
@Scott The German equivalent to the Austrian Baggerei (Deichgräber) is Erdbau (earth moving).

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erdbau

Zitat: "Dazu gehören: Bodenabtrag, Erdmengenbewegung (fachsprachlich: Erdmassenbewegung), Bodenverfüllungen, Auffüllungen und Aufschüttungen, Baustraßenbau, Bodenaushub für Gräben, Baggern über und unter Wasser, Fundamentaushub, Herstellung von Baugruben für Gebäude usw. Erdarbeiten sind Bestandteil der Rohbauarbeiten."

Lancashireman Aug 4, 2014:
Abbruchsunternehmer, Baggereien (Deichgräber) How about combining these as 'demolition and excavation companies'?
You certainly don't need two words in English for 'Baggereien (Deichgräber)', let alone with one of them in parentheses.
'Excavator' is a machine and therefore cannot be used to designate its operator.

ditching and trenching companies

You could leave out the Baggereien - it would make it "belt and braces"

You could also, however, say "Earthmoving companies (ditching and trenching)"

Or "earthmoving contractors"

This seems to be an Austrian expression for earthmoving contractors - similar companies in Germany perform Erdarbeiten, Erdaushubarbeiten, Baggerarbeiten, Grabenbau etc.
