Richtig ist, dass Musil bereit war, für sein Gastland auch etwas zu tun. Als die weltpolitische Lage immer mehr auf einen nahenden Krieg hindeutete, liess Musil durch den mit ihm bekannten Zürcher Schriftsteller Otto Wirz beim Politischen Departement in Bern anfragen, ob man ihn eventuell in der psychologischen Kriegführung verwenden könne: «Ein bedeutender deutscher Schriftsteller, Arier, Emigrant, im Kriege Angehöriger des Stabes in der Armee des Erzherzogs Eugen für politische Angelegenheiten, erkundigt sich bei mir nach dem Vorhandensein oder Nichtvorhandensein von Möglichkeiten, die erlaubten, dass er in ähnlicher Weise bei schweizerischen Instanzen Verwendung fände, wenn, wie er sagte, der Teufel losginge.» So Wirz' Formulierungen. Eine Antwort aus Bern ist nicht überliefert.
Obwohl Musil mit dem deutschen Generalkonsul in Zürich wenn nicht auf gutem, so doch passablem Fusse stand, betrachtete er sich mit dem Dritten Reich wohl schon zu Ende des Jahres 1938 im Kriegszustand. Da die Nazis missliebige emigrierte Autoren wie Theodor Lessing ja schon 1933 in ihrem Zufluchtsort hatten ermorden lassen, entwickelte das Ehepaar Musil Szenarien der eigenen Bedrohung. Als nämlich zu Weihnachten aus England ein Paket unbekanntem Absender in der Pension Fortuna eintraf, witterten die Adressaten ein Bombenattentat des deutschen Geheimdienstes und warfen das unheimliche Präsent in den nächsten Wasserlauf. Einige Wochen später stellte sich heraus, dass Otto Pächt, ein nach England ausgewanderter Freund und Förderer des nun zerronnenen Wiener Musil-Fonds, eine britische Firma beauftragt hatte, Mr. Musil zu Weihnachten einen Plumpudding zu schicken.

It is true that Musil was also ready to do something for the country where he had become a guest. Although Musil was on passable, if not exactly good terms with the German consul in Zurich, he considered himself to be in a state of war with the Third Reich already by the end of 1938. The Nazis had caused unpopular emigrant authors to be murdered in their places of asylum (like Theodor Lessig as early as 1933), so the Musils worked out scenarios to deal with any such threats. Once, when a Christmas package arrived at the Pension Fortuna from an unknown sender in England, the addressees got wind of a bomb threat coming from the German secret service and tossed the sinister present into the nearest waterway. A few weeks later, the facts came to light: Otto Pächt, a friend and sponsor of the now defunct Musil Fund in Vienna, who had emigrated to England, had commissioned a British company to send Mr. Musil a plum pudding for Christmas.

Translation - English In the event that the Tenant leaves any property in the Premises after the Lease Term expires, the Landlord shall have the right to inventory the property and put it in storage, acting at the expense of the Tenant. Also, the Landlord shall independently define the term and other storage conditions. The Tenant should be advised concerning the property transfer into storage within 3 (three) months.
