German term

Folie, here

German to English Tech/Engineering Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts) manufacture of photographic film and slides
This is from a general text marketing the industries of Saxony. The Wolfen factories manufactures products including photographic films. I think Unterlage is to be translated as "base" here and a Folie can mean a slide (transparency) but how do I translate it in this sentence?
Filme bedürfen auch heute noch einer Unterlage, einer Folie, auf die in mehreren Schichten chemische Verbindungen auftragen werden, die dann die fotografischen Eigenschaften erzeugen.

Discussion

Stephen Old (asker) Sep 27, 2013:
Folie Thanks for all the suggestions. As so often in English there are several ways to express the idea. I think Folie (foil) is a bit ofa false friend here and as this was a general text I steered away from the more scientific translations (carrier, foil substrate and film base). I had only one day to do the translation so went with coating...of layers
Stephen Old (asker) Sep 26, 2013:
coating? My first thought was to say a coating - consisting of a base layer to which several layers of chemical compounds are applied which then create the photographic effects. Would this make sense?

carrier (foil) of 3 layers...?

layer

Technically I suppose they are 'films' as well, but they are normally referred to as a base layer and then one or more layers with the chemical emulsions.

Oops, obviously meant base layer.
Example sentence:

Today's films still require a base layer, and several layers coated in photosensitive emulsions which give the film its photographic properties.

Colour film has three layers of emulsion for three kinds of silver halide which are sensitive for the light of 3 different light wavelengths.

Note from asker:
Thanks again, I overlooked this full translation when I posted my last comment. I think layers is a good translation of Schichten.

That's also the film base. Don't think there's a need to be as wordy as the source text given that the extra words don't add any meaning that hasn't already been expressed through film base.

film, film base, carrier

Hi,

Try this for size:
"Event today, films still need a carrier, a transparent film base, on to which several layers of chemical compounds are applied to create their required photographic properties."

Cheers
