Spanish term

vacas bravas

Spanish to English Science Livestock / Animal Husbandry
This is obviously the female of the "toro bravo", which is traditionally translated as (Spanish) fighting bull. "Female fighting bull" obviously won't do, so I'm a bit stuck at the moment with how to get the idea across that this is the female of this particular breed. I suppose "fighting cow" would be an option but it seems to be lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on.

Just in case anyone feels offended by the question, this term comes from a book on bovine parasitology and has nothing to do with bullfighting per se.

As ever, all help will be much appreciated.

TIA,

Andy

Yvonne Gallagher Sep 19, 2013:
need to explain imo

I think you can't put "fighting cow" on its own as it makes no sense and could be misinterpreted. You need to use "breeding cow/brood cow for (Spanish) fighting bull" or something like that. The other alternative, if you know the breed, is to use that and clarify cow is used to produce fighting bulls.
Neil Ashby Sep 19, 2013:
Agree with Andy Females of this breed are killed (when young / before breeding age) if they do not show good fighting qualities - they are tested in 'fights' on the farm to see if they would bestow good qualities on potential offspring. See my Wiki ref.... ;)
Dr. Andrew Frankland (asker) Sep 19, 2013:
Not vaquilla/heifer Thanks for your help, Patricia, but these are adult cows used for breeding. The disease concerned only tends to be found in adults.
Patricia ONeill Sep 19, 2013:
vaca brava = vaquilla = heifer The first term is taken from WP http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaquilla
and heifer is the translation provided by Babylon:
vaquilla (f)
n. heifer, young cow, cow that has not had a calf.

Maybe it helps you to consider ir from another angle

Wiki refers to the "Spanish fighting bull" or "toro de lidia" as a breed, and encompasses the females. The females are tested for their fighting qualities as a gauge of how good its offspring will be.

"For the males, this will establish if they are suitable for breeding, the bullfight, or being slaughtered for meat. The testing for the bullfight is only of their aggression towards the horse, as they cannot see a man on the ground before they enter the ring. They learn how to use their horns in tests of strength and dominance with other bulls. Due to their special aggression, these combats can lead to severe injuries and even the death of bulls at great cost to the breeder.

The females are more thoroughly tested, including by a bullfighter with his capes; hence a bull's "courage" is often said to descend from his mother.

If fit for bullfighting bulls will return to their peers. ****Cows*** passing the tienta will become mothers and slaughtered only when they are too old to bear calves."

You could put "female toro de lidia" but who knows what a "toro de lidia" outside the profession, or is the audience only going to be professional and so they will recognise the less common name??

Note from asker:
Sorry but I don't think this fits. Wild cows would be those living in the wild, whereas these are farmed, albeit on huge estates, to produce fighting bulls.
