Apparently, hash brown means "galette de pomme de terre" but I am quite unsure about what a "hash brown maker" is.
This is part of a list of other kitchen devices.

: yes, because after the râpe has done its work, the grated potatoes are pan fried until they are crisp. here's a picture (and recipe): http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/crispy_hash_browns/ + http://timawright.blogspot.be/2012/03/hash-brown-maker.html

: Hash browns are made with grated potato (a little bit like farcidure / milhassou), not mash. / OK, I wasn't thinking about the interchangeable grille type!

: for hash brown, the potatoes are grated raw and then pan fried. a presse purée works with cooked (ie boiled/steamed) potatoes. this will never yield real hash browns.

I think you might find this is a kind of heating machine, like a gaufrier, in which you out your grated potato mixture to cook.

Not really any convincing Ghits for this idea... so as W/A says, maybe they are only ever pan-fried. :-(

I just wondered if it was maybe some kind of press for moulding them, like you get for hamburgers etc.?

Yes, but think about it: a grater is 'à tout faire' as well — and look how many electrical appliances are called a '...-maker' (yoghurt/bread/ice-cream to name but a few...)

: a "maker" would be s.t. elaborate, a machine, not just a grater// as this "maker": http://premeditatedleftovers.com/recipes-cooking-tips/the-fa...

Thanks, Daryo! Yes, that's the way I see it too, like a coffee-maker; otherwise, you might as well say that a potato peeler is also a 'hash-brown maker' ;-)
