Dutch term

klonk het voortdurend

Dutch to English Marketing Architecture in a text about Dutch Design
Only these 3 words remain and the assignment will be complete. The context: "Kenmerkend voor Dutch Design was de ratio, de ironie en de heldere kleuren, maar door alle disciplines op een hoop te gooien werden de oppervlakkige overeenkomsten zichtbaar." Thanks in advance.

Discussion

Barend van Zadelhoff Apr 1, 2013:
bandy on the basis of the information below, I think 'bandy' comes near but would not be the best solution; 'klonk het voortdurend' (in this context) is more neutral, it is more like that MANY DIFFERENT groups and/or individuals claimed/stated/asserted/ENDORSED, perhaps echoed, during a CONTINUOUS PERIOD OF TIME that this trio of qualities were characteristic of Dutch Design

van Dale - verspreiden, rondbazuinen

the news was quickly bandied about
het nieuws ging als een lopend vuurtje

rondbazuinen

broadcast
trumpet, trumpet around, (Brits-Engels ook) trumpet about, blaze
(about / abroad), advertise

iets overal rondbazuinen
broadcast something everywhere, shout something out from the
rooftops / so that everyone can hear it, (formeel) blaze something abroad
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 28, 2013:
You might have put the relevant words between some form of punctuation, as Phil Goddard already pointed out.
The words may then be left out. It has happened to me here as well, but I don't know for sure which signs it were.

It could be these < > .
John Decker (asker) Mar 28, 2013:
The 3 problem words came right after "kleuren," I don't know how they came to be missing.
writeaway Mar 27, 2013:
with freekfluweel your sentence doesn't contain the phrase in your question
Liesbeth Blom-Smith Mar 27, 2013:
Ja precies. Kan je ons de zin geven met 'klonk het voortdurend' erin?

Ideetjes: 'the cry went up', 'everyone said', 'was the general feeling' en nog veel meer mogelijkheden!
freekfluweel Mar 27, 2013:
Where does it say: klonk het voortdurend?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all. A rarely-used verb, "to bandy," comes to mind: "So it was bandied about." Will that fit also, or has the verb become too rare in English to be used any more?"

perhaps you could opt for this approach:
combining 'klonk het voortdurend' and 'kenmerkend' in one phrase: 'widely known for its'

Kenmerkend voor Dutch Design was de ratio, de ironie en de heldere kleuren, klonk het voortdurend

Dutch Design was widely known for its logic (?), its irony and its bright colours but ....

actual context

Kenmerkend voor Dutch Design was de ratio, de ironie en de heldere kleuren, klonk het voortdurend, maar door alle disciplines op één hoop te gooien werden de oppervlakkige overeenkomsten zichtbaar. In navolging daarop ontstonden oppervlakkige discussies. Dutch Design is geen school zoals de Amsterdamse School en De Stijl.

agree philgoddard : Thanks. It's possible the asker enclosed the phrase in angled brackets or something that made it disappear in HTML.
