English term

online service

English to Spanish Tech/Engineering Internet, e-Commerce Online commerce
"XYZ is an online service that makes it easy for those in the email marketing industry to carry this out effectively (...)."

So I'm generally wondering about the term "online service". I've been leaning towards "sitio web", but someone suggested "servicio de Internet" - how would you put it?

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Yo hablaría de "servicio o servicios que se ofrecen por Internet o a través de Internet".

Let me clarify... I might not have given you the most perfect example, but what I'm looking for is the Spanish term for an "online service" meaning: an online platform that provides e-services. That's why the suggestion of "web services" doesn't do it for me, as it refers to the services provided and not to the site. I don't know if I'm explaining it right, but let's set another example, just for the sake of it: "Booking.com" is a booking service - how would you call it?

servicios web / servicios de Internet / servicios en línea

Marta,

According to the context you are giving us, I think the expression “servicio en línea” is right but very generic.

“Servicios en línea” implies different electronic mailing services, web portal, web searching, web hosting, online processing of real time transactions and more.

For this reason, somebody recommended you to use “servicios de Internet” because is more specific according to your context.

But also you can use the term “web” as a common noun: “servicios web”.

The term “web” is recognized by the Real Academia Española. It is not more a neologism.

The Real Academia Española says about: “web” (http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltConsulta?TIPO_BUS=3&LEMA=web...
web. (Del ingl. web, red, malla).
1. f. Inform. Red informática.
□ V. página web

In your case, the most specific terms are: “servicios web”. After that “servicios de Internet” and in the end: “servicios en línea”.

The term “online” is not recognized by the Real Academia Española. If you want to respect the rules of the language, I think you have to exclude from the Spanish translation or write it as neologism, maybe like this: “online” or with italics.

You have to make the decision, my suggestions include 3 options:
- servicios web
- servicios de Internet
- servicios en línea

I hope my analysis helps you in your work.

Thank you,

Domingo Trassens

Marta:
Thank you for your message. I appreciate a lot your new explanation. As I explained before there are different possibilities.
In your case, if you exclude "servicios web", you have other two options:
- "servicios de Internet"
- "servicios en línea".
Now, I add two more:
"servicios informáticos en línea".
"servicios digitales en línea."
(This expression linkes with "e-services" (electronic services). For example, when you talk in Spanish about e-book, normally you says: "libros electrónicos" or "libros digitales". Today, everybody assumes that behind a digital device there is an Internet connection. In this case you don't need to repeat the word Internet.

In the case of "servicios en línea", the expression "en línea" has different implications because before the creation of Internet, the big companies had online services through private telecommunication networks and till now, a lot of companies use Intranet networks.

However, if your translation is for technical people, everybody in this environment understand the meaning of "servicios en línea", "procesamiento en línea", "aplicaciones en línea".

I hope this additional comments help you. VERY IMPORTANT! From the beginning my intention was offering different expressions and you decide what is the best for your case.

Thank you.

Marta:

Other explanation. When I talk about "servicios", I include "servicio" in singular and "servicios" en plural.
