A footballer is asked if he prefers to play football/soccer in front of a live audience or TV cameras - "Con le telecamere si ha sempre paura che le cose non vengano bene perchè non si è abituati a farlo, ma cerco sempre di divertirmi e di *stare bene con la gente*."
I'm of the opinion he wants to look good and make a good impression ... any suggestions?

feel comfortable/at ease with the (live) audience
"la gente" can only refer to the "live audience" in this context, in contrast to the TV cameras. It sounds like this footballer feels he has two things to deal with:
1.The fear of things going wrong on TV.
2.Feeling comfortable enough in front of "la gente", (which could actually cover both he live and TV audiences), to know that he can enjoy himself.

Entertain the crowd
I think this is what he is referring to and is the kind of language typical of an English speaking footballer.
