German term

Pos.

German to English Law/Patents Patents examinations
This sentence comes from a summary of an examination for patentability. The numbers in question do not refer to the patent being examined, but to another patent used to evaluate patentability.

Is it possible that Pos. here does not mean position, but rather reference number?
The parts are not moving, there is not reference to an open or closed position, instead Pos. is used to indicate a specific piece of the device. Normally, I would assumed that it is a reference number, but I can't find evidence that Pos. is used in this way.

Discussion

Rebecca Garber (asker) Feb 3, 2012:
Thank you, Alison Thank you for assuming that I did actually do my homework, and for posting proof that this term is, indeed, used in patents.
Alison MacG Feb 3, 2012:
Reason for question? Perhaps this question could have been phrased differently, but I can certainly understand why it was asked. My interpretation was as follows "Could anyone with experience in patents confirm whether Pos. = item is actually used in this way in a patent context?". I have been working with patents for more than 20 years and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I have ever seen this usage of Pos./item in a patent.
David Williams Feb 3, 2012:
Absolutely Have to agree with Phil, this is a very standard translation, not specific to patents, finance or chemistry.
philgoddard Feb 2, 2012:
It's not specific to patents. The abbreviation is widely used in all sectors of industry. And if you have checked the glossary and don't believe that any of the previous questions are relevant to your context, you should say so - otherwise, we can only assume that you've forgotten to check.
Rebecca Garber (asker) Feb 2, 2012:
Glossary I *did* check the glossary, Phil. I found nothing related to patents, and reference numbers. Because of the legal nature of this work, I felt very uncomfortable applying answers from finance and chemistry to a rather specific question.
philgoddard Feb 2, 2012:
We've had this question many times before. Please check the glossary before posting.

Item No.

Or simply "Item".

"Pos." almost NEVER means "position" - a frequent false friend!

For some examples, google

"Pos." "Item No." site:co.uk

(or specify English-language sites in some other way).

agree Nicole Schnell : Simply "item", followed by the number format. Example: Item 5-5.555. Patent and tech manual speak.
