French term

Risques Industriels

French to English Bus/Financial Engineering: Industrial Risk assessment
"Consultant en Risques Industriels"

Again, from a list of job titles. "Industrial risk" seems to get a lot of google hits most of them from French or Belgian websites. I think "Hazard Risk Consultant" would be more appropriate but it just doesn't sound quite right to me...any help would be very much appreciated :)

You are quite correct, Barabara, in saying that he is not in the least interested in illegal substances, though I don't know if his brief includes sound levels. It definitely does include safety of electrical equipment, fireworks, scaffolding, etc. I do think, however, that EN puts the emphasis on "safety" rather than "risk".
B D Finch Mar 25, 2011:
@chris In the case of pop concerts your safety consultant wouldn't be overly concerning himself with what illegal substances might be ingested or long-term health advice (e.g. exposure to high dB levels can seriously damage your hearing). He would also not want to frighten the teenyboppers by suggesting that they might be taking a risk by attending, never mind a hazard!
Heloise Harrap (asker) Mar 25, 2011:
Hi Chris, the other job titles all relate to oil fields so the consultant must be assessing the risk of accidents/explosions things like that. Industrial safety consultant sounds very fitting actually. Thanks!
chris collister Mar 25, 2011:
I've just been talking to a friend who is an events safety consultant for pop concerts and such-like. He tells me that he always avoids the use of the word "health" on account of its generally pejorative connotations. He is an "events safety consultant" but depending on one's specialism, one might be an "industrial safety consultant" or structural safety consultant" etc. The word "risk" is not generally used, apparently, except in "risk assessment" etc.

agree rkillings : Stick with 'risk'. It's about the probability and severity of the hazards.

Hazardous risk consultant

neutral B D Finch : Need to choose between hazard and risk. e.g. I would hazard a guess, but not hazardously risk or riskily hazard a guess.

Industrial hazards

Hazards are risks, of the sort that have severe consequences, so you shouldn't use both words. If it is about health and safety, then use "hazard"; if it is about risk of competition, losing money etc. use "risk".

Thanks Chris. Not really: health and safety is not only about hazards.
