La croissance des émissions serait encore plus forte, n’eut été des progrès accomplis en matière de rendement de carburant, particulièrement dans le cas des véhicules lourds qui ont enregistrés une amélioration de l’efficacité énergétique de 24% entre 1990 et 2001. Source text - French Longtemps caractérisée comme une ville-frontière entre l’Amérique et l’Europe, Montréal est aujourd’hui une ville-monde, dans la seule province francophone du continent. Au gré de l’immigration et de l’histoire mouvementée des annexions, fusions et défusions, les limites de la ville se sont déplacées, mais sa géographie spectaculaire est toujours la même, peu différente des descriptions que l’on peut lire dans les récits des premiers découvreurs. C’est d’abord une île majestueuse d’un peu moins de 500 kilomètres carrés, située sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent, dont les rives sont dominées par la montagne qui fut nommée Mont-Royal par Jacques Cartier en 1535. Porte d’entrée de la conquête et cœur commercial, c’est son port qui a forcé la croissance de cette ville fondée en 1642 et dont on décidera en 1792 qu’elle sera divisée en deux parties, l’Est et l’Ouest, par le boulevard Saint-Laurent.

Mais revenons à l’histoire et aux changements radicaux des dernières années et aux effets esthétiques et sociaux qui ont modifié l’horizon de la création architecturale. Translation - English For many years described as a city straddling the border between America and Europe, Montreal is now a global city, in the only French-speaking province of North America. Buffeted by waves of immigration and municipal annexations, mergers and de-mergers, the limits of the city have shifted. A colonial city was transformed into a many-splendoured collection of lively streets and avenues. The island of Montreal now has 1.8 million inhabitants within a vast metropolitan area totalling 2.8 million. Even before experiencing its new architectural creations, visitors immediately feel that Montreal is a welcoming city. Take a stroll along the lively and contrasting streets of its traditional neighbourhoods – lined with the vernacular brick rowhouses of working-class families. The contrast with the old greystone city, and the central business district, dominated by glass and steel, makes them seem far away from these streets. You will quickly share with present-day inhabitants a sense of place which makes Montreal so different from other large North American cities. On the one hand, one is astonished by the excessive and ambition of the built environment, on the other, one is charmed by the modesty and discretion of things.
How are these extremes in Montreal’s contemporary architecture combined? The question can provide a measure for the poetry of expanses and materials that have influenced efforts by Montreal architects, as much as have the realities of uses and seasons. Let’s turn first to history, to the drastic changes of the last years and the aesthetic and social effects that have modified the horizon of architectural creation. This is the subject of this architectural guidebook, which presents without prejudice and with an inventive attitude the most significant Montreal buildings open to the public.

Le débat public sur les grands projets autoroutiers proposés par le Ministère des transports du Québec (MTQ) reprend de la vigueur suite à la visite de quatre experts américains venus exprimés de manière éloquente comment ces projets, relevant d’une époque révolue, ne répondaient absolument pas aux besoins et aux aspirations des Montréalais en matière de qualité de vie, de santé publique, d’économie et d’environnement.
Au-delà des enjeux de transport, ces projets posent une question essentielle : quelle est la ville que nous voulons ? Il semble évident que les priorités des banlieues de la région métropolitaine ne sont pas les mêmes que celles de Montréal. Il semble évident que les priorités du MTQ ne sont pas les mêmes que celles des Montréalais. Alors comment faire, en tant que Montréalais, pour que nos priorités soient prises en compte ? Le Centre d'écologie urbaine de Montréal propose deux pistes d’actions.
Le 5e Sommet citoyen de Montréal
Une quinzaine de réseaux d’organismes montréalais unissent leurs forces pour organiser le 5e Sommet citoyen de Montréal, un grand rassemblement populaire, indépendant et non partisan qui se tiendra du 5 au 7 juin prochain.
