German term

Erdlinien

German to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Wir segeln an den Schnittpunkt der Erdlinien 26 Grad, 10 Minuten, 57 Sekunden Nord und 6 Grad...

We are sailing to the intersection of the erdlinien 26 degrees, 10 minutes, 57 seconds north and 6 degrees...

It's not some other word for longitude or latitude, right?
In a nautical context I don't think it could be my other guess of "lines of convergence" or "lei lines" - any thoughts people?
Proposed translations (English)

Discussion

philgoddard Oct 4, 2010:
If you post that as an answer, it gets my vote. You could just say "we are sailing to latitude x and longitude y", or leave out "latitude and longitude" and just give the coordinates.
phillee Oct 4, 2010:
Difficult Sounds poetic in German but "earthlines" sounds weird to me in English so why not just go for ...
"intersection of the lines of latitude 26 ... and longitude 6 ... "
Unless someone has a nicer collective term for the lines.

neutral philgoddard : This is what it literally means, but assuming it's latitude and longitude, I don't think you'd say this.

latitude/longitude

You're right, davidgreen. Going by the usage in your sentence, it does look like "some other word for longitude or latitude".
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : This MUST be the answer, though it is indeed in Algeria. We don't know whether the longitude is 6 degrees east or west, but that doesn't make any difference. A bit more context would help.
