Disclosure

English to Dutch Medical Medical: Health Care HIV/AIDS status ...
I have searched the ProZ archives for the word "disclosure", however, in the English document we are working on, this word is used as a section header dealing with revealing one's HIV status. In English, the single word "disclosure" is general, but it is perfectly adequate because the paper is about HIV/AIDS and "disclosure" is thus not ambiguous. What would be an appropriate Dutch translation? We come up with "onthulling", "melding", "openbaring" and a number of others which are not entirely satisfactory ("te vertellen", and so on). We note that some Dutch documents on the same issue just use the English "disclosure" (we would prefer to use a Dutch word is there is one for this field of health care).

Discussion

Dave Cooper (X) (asker) Oct 4, 2010:
Thanks everyone for your input. I will close all these items out as soon as I get some feedback from Aidsmap NAM in London and from the Hiv Vereniging in Amsterdam.

In this document, "Disclosure" is the title for an extended section that include sub groups on many other issues, such as "Confidentiality", "Prosecution for transmission of HIV", "HIV and children", "Prison and HIV" and "Getting specialist help". The term "disclosure" is thus covering a broad area of all aspects of the disclosing of HIV status.

context to whom, how, why is the HIV positive person disclosing their status? to an employer? verbally?

bekendmaking

de HIV-positieve persoon maakt zichzelf bekend als zodanig, bijvoorbeeld aan een (nieuwe) werkgever of een partner.

die interpretatie leid ik tenminste af uit de context ("revealing one's HIV status")

If it's a section header, you could consider "Vertellen of verzwijgen", "Vertellen of niet?", or something similar.

Whom do I tell, who doesn't need to know... That seems to be a better solution than trying to find a Dutch word that captures the exact same meaning as 'disclosure' AND fits in this context.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Ron et al ... this was a difficult one. There were many submissions both here, and from HIV/AIDS sources outside of ProZ Translator's Workshop. Considering the structure of the document and how "disclosure" is being used in the documentation, we find it best that we use "bekendmaking" ... but we are aware that different nomenclature and terminological structures could also suffice for other presented and formatted written explanation of revealing HIV status (especially in regards to the various possible "vertellen" permutations). Thanks a lot everyone!"

verslaggeving

Dit zie ik zowel terugkomen in financiële documenten (verslaggeving van een onderneming volgens vastgelegde regels) als in medische documenten. Misschien een goed idee?

vertrouwelijkheid

Although this is not a direct translation of the word, it still might be adequate in this context.
In legal texts, the term often is "non-disclosure". Here, I assume, it is also a matter of how to handle sensitive information.

openbaring

....van een ziekte, als het over het ziektebeeld van één persoon gaat. "Verspreiding" als het een hele groep betreft.

Althans, zo interpreteer ik jouw tekst, maar moet eerlijk zeggen dat deze mij niet helemaal duidelijk is.
