German term

Schenkel

May offend German to English Medical Medical (general) anatomy of the penis
This appears in an early 19th-century text which includes excerpts from an autopsy report on the body of what was then termed a hermaphrodite.

The text runs: 'Dicht unter dieser Furche entspringt mit zwei Schenkeln ein breites Frenulum, welches die Eichel mit einem weiten, den Hals derselben umgebenen, Praeputium verbindet.

Anatomy is not my forte and I'm feeling rather challenged by this. I have done as much research as my stomach can stand on this and would now appreciate the assistance of a medical mind.
Apologies if it is obvious to those in the know. And many thanks for any assistance.

Discussion

Helen Shiner (asker) Feb 18, 2010:
@ Cilian I didn't know where the conversation might go, nor how much more of the text would be needed for explanation. The sentence I gave should not be offensive to anyone, but some of the rest of the text might have been. Just erring on the side of caution.
Cilian O'Tuama Feb 18, 2010:
Offensive? How could this question possibly be deemed offensive? To whom?
Just thinking out loud.

crura

'Schenkel' is often translated in the anatomical literature as 'crus' (for the singular) and 'crura' for the plural. Also used in connection with the clitoris (e.g. in the Springer medical dictionary).
