English term

sound made when opening a bottle

English Art/Literary Linguistics
Would anyone remind me how can you write the sound made when opening a bottle of a fizzy drink?
Something that sounds like http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=6110
E.g. The bottle opened with a fizz/hiss -- anything more colloquial?

Discussion

Marek Daroszewski (MrMarDar) (asker) Feb 4, 2010:
Pop vs. beer Carol, sorry if you felt mislead. They say a picture is worth a thousand words..... Hence the link to the sound :-) For me pop is (http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=66393 ). While my original link sounds more like (http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=74511 ). Would the latter be also 'pop'?
Jim Tucker (X) Feb 4, 2010:
the supplied recording ...is pretty specific
Carol Gullidge Feb 4, 2010:
ah! now opening a can of pop or beer makes a different sound altogether, but that isn't what you specified!
Marek Daroszewski (MrMarDar) (asker) Feb 4, 2010:
Coke/beer bottle (or can) vs. wine/champagne bottle - to be more precise. That's why I tried to find the right sound.

It's not a fizz yet, as that is the actual sound of the bubbles, not the escaping air pressure. Might be a hiss, but that doesn't capture the plosive opening.
Peer comment(s):

agree Laurie Price : this one's good too -- good point about the air pressure --

agree Alison Sabedoria (X) : Seems right for a bottle rather than a can

agree MurielP (X) : it reminds me of an old schwepps advert

Ah yes....or even http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pschitt

pop

is the usual one, if you don't need to be inventive.

but "opened with a fizz" is fine
Note from asker:
I'm sure you open a wine with a pop, but a coke or beer? Maybe fizz is the one, though?
Peer comment(s):

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Exactly what I was thinking - and it's what will appear if it's in cartoon form!
2 mins
many thanks Noni - indeed it is!
agree Laurie Price : yes, pop and fizz -- both components
8 mins
many thanks Laurie! As long as he doesn't use "hiss" (sounds a bit sinister!), there's probably no limit to the no. of choices
agree Jenni Lukac (X)

many thanks Jenni!
neutral Sarah Bessioud : IMO, pop is the perfect sound for a cork coming out of a wine or champagne, rather than a bottle of 'pop'. Mmm, now that's a good idea for this evening...
21 mins
true, but I did also mention "fizz". This works if you want to use the construction "... with a fizz"
agree Yasutomo Kanazawa : This is the common word used to describe the sound.

Phsst

According to the web ref below, this is how Coca-cola write their can-opening sound
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jim Tucker (X) : The can's a little different: more powerful at first, then dies out suddenly. Bottle has more follow-through. // Well, you know these sound people!
6 mins
Now you're getting technical ;-) Well, if the sound guys want more follow-through, there's nothing wrong with Phsssssssssttttttttt!
agree Yasutomo Kanazawa : This sounds good too.

Thank you
agree Mirra_ : it's this, but shoul be spelled 'fsst' " the "fsst" sound of beer being opened" http://the-enfield-strikes-back.blogspot.com/ :)) fssssssssssssttt!

clink or fizz

..., i.e., "to open with a clink (of metal)," especially to emphasize the material of which the cap is made, or "to open with a fizz," especially to emphasize the sound of escaping gas.

Merriam-Webster has this to say:
clink
intransitive verb : to give out a slight sharp short metallic sound
transitive verb : to cause to clink
(See http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/clink .)

fizz
intransitive verb
1 : to make a hissing or sputtering sound : EFFERVESCE
[...]
(See http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fizz .)

Phzzz

You then open the top of the can to hear the ""phzzzz"" sound of the soda as it is opened

Some write it as pjzzzz 4 "Z's" but mostly it is phzzz 3 "Z's"

Maybe you can use the 4 "Z's" to make it a longer refreshing sound

useful sounds

perhaps, if you never looked for it you won't believe it, but they are not so easy to find

http://www.rickwalton.com/freeu/brains/sounds.htm

moreover

There was a very faint fsst sound when I popped it open so carbonation had clearly started.

You're crazy! *fsst, sound of a bottle of Coca-Cola being opened*
