Melting of the cylinder head
The cylinder head gasket (guarnizione) sits between the cylinder head (testata) and the cylinder block. The gasket has holes that allow the passage of water and oil from the block to the head and vice versa. It appears that there was a batch of faulty gaskets that restricted the water flow, causing the cylinder head to overheat and to melt.

You would generally say "the cylinder head seized" or "the cylinder head seized up", rather than using the noun which sounds like a heart attack, but is pretty similar. The metal itself doesn't actually start melting down. However the gasket between the head and the block gets hot enough to weld the cylinder head to the engine block and all the tappets, rockers and moving parts on the head seize (jam and won't move) and stop working. It the engine is made of aluminium, then it warps with the heat and you just have to throw it.
It is difficult to actually do this. I once drove a mini from Birmingham to Scotland with the cylinder head gasket gone. When the head overheated the radiator boiled over and then the engine stopped, but going slowly stopping for cool-offs we got there in the end. With a few new gaskets, a few new hoses and a few nuts tightened it was running right as rain the next day.
