Wimmelbild

German to English Other Printing & Publishing pictorial dictionaries
As part of a description of a pictorial dictionary, I get the expression "doppelseitige Wimmelbilder".

From my experience of pictorial dictionaries, I suspect that this is a picture with lots of images on it. But what's the official term for it in English?

Many thanks in advance!

Discussion

Jan Liebelt (asker) Sep 7, 2009:
Thanks! Thank you to everyone for your contributions. Having seen at least the cover of the pictorial dictionary in question, I suspect the use of "Wimmelbilder" is a little over-exaggerated. There appear to be lots of images on each page, but not as many as in the classic "Where's Waldo?"-type Wimmelbild. I will therefore translate "28 doppelseitige Wimmelbilder" as "28 picture-packed double-sided pages".
Jan Liebelt (asker) Sep 7, 2009:
@ Audrey Not a Waldo-type seek-and-find picture book, but a pictorial dictionary which presumably has lots of theme-based pictures on each page as well as the names of the various objects in one or more languages. At least that's the scenario in my Duden Oxford Bildwörterbuch, which I am basing my assumptions on.
Audrey Foster (X) Sep 7, 2009:
@ Jan Liebelt Are we talking about a seek-and-find picture book, something like the one mentioned here: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3593108 ?

agree Johanna González : hidden object game is what I look for on google when I want to play that kind of games where you have to find one or more objects in a crowded image. If I don´t find anything interesting in English, I type "Wimmelbildspiel". :)

numbered illustration

It doesn't capture the "teeming" aspect, but that's the best equivalent I could find.

The Oxford-Duden Pictorial German and English Dictionary, Second Edition identifies over 29,000 objects by means of numbered illustrations and offers at a glance their German and English terms. This new edition has been completely updated and revised to include the most recent innovations in science and technology and to offer increased coverage of all major fields of reference.

double-page spread

Based on the premise that pictures can more clearly convey certain kinds of information, these dictionaries present a list of vocabulary relating to a subject together with a picture illustrating that subject.
Each double-page spread links the words by number to the picture situation drawn from everyday life;

The Oxford-Duden Pictorial English Dictionary
There are certain kinds of information which can be conveyed more readily and clearly by pictures than by definitions and explanations alone: an illustration will help the reader to visualize the object denoted by the word and to form an impression of the way in which the objects function in their own technical field or in everyday life.
Each double-page of the dictionary contains a list of the vocabulary of a subject together with the picture illustrating this vocabulary.

Note from asker:
Although I suspect (see my discussion with Audrey) that the layout is the same as the pictorial dictionary you mention, I'm not sure if the entries are numbered. And in any case, the emphasis is on the number of images per page, not that they are numbered. Thanks for your input nonetheless.

Info

Wimmelbild

A Wimmelbild is a German word for an illustrated page showing a scene with many, many different details, typically for children. An example is a crowded city crossing, a park, etc. The page is full of details, with many peoples and things are "wimmeling" around.

Wimmelbild, which means “teeming figure picture,” refers to the tradition of Renaissance painting in which super-abundant masses of small figures are brought together to make one large scene. Hieronymus Bosch’s famous painting Garden of Earthly Delights is an example of the dense, overgrown profusion of figuration and bustling activity that coexists in the wimmelbild. The small figures are often finely detailed and expressively autonomous. Yet the artist’s challenge is to make a coherent whole out of the busy and kaleidoscopic accumulation, a scheme to draw in the viewer and direct the eye in a tour of the canvas.
