typeface design is too general a discipline for me

The last part of this, however, seems to make little sense. Typeface design is a highly specialised and skilled profession. Just look at the really dreadful design of most of the typefaces supplied with MS Office! Perhaps the writer lacked an understanding of the difference between good and bad design?

Thanks kashew
agree jaynedmoore : or maybe too 'broad'

Thanks jayne. How much more narrow and specialised could s/he get? Serif design perhaps!
agree Helen Shiner : Strange without anymore context - perhaps he wanted to apply it within some sort of mega Gesamtkunstwerk or wanted to take up something else entirely. Difficult to imagine - as you say the opposite would be easier to comprehend!

Letter drawing is too general of a system for me

Or: For me, letter drawing is too general of a system.
Really would have to see a whole paragraph to grasp the style of the writer...

Typeface design is not specialised enough for me

Another way of expressing the idea.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helen Shiner : Yes, I like this too, but still don't know what the author could possibly mean, as BD Finch says.

lettering is a too common device for my liking

Another point of view.
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : Lettering is not a "device" but, that quibble apart, you could be right and it might well be lettering rather than typeface design.
