The last part of this, however, seems to make little sense. Typeface design is a highly specialised and skilled profession. Just look at the really dreadful design of most of the typefaces supplied with MS Office! Perhaps the writer lacked an understanding of the difference between good and bad design?

: Lettering is not a "device" but, that quibble apart, you could be right and it might well be lettering rather than typeface design.
