What do we really mean by "semplice"?
Well, we are trying to say that they are your average joes, that they are what they are and nothing more, as a colleague said, "uncomplicated." They have nothing to hide - what you see is what you get. How would I express a concept like this in English? I would say that they are decent people (or folk, if you prefer), or perhaps even honest people.
So the phrase would go something like "decent, hardworking people" or "honest hardworking folk," depending on what you feel works best.
