Discussion

Ellen Kraus Jun 4, 2008:
so far all the answers you have received plead for sliding s. But medical doctors, writing their reports etc. do not seem to be very discriminate. I also found a great number of articles in which GLIDING surface is used.
Holly Hart (asker) Jun 4, 2008:
Answer for Gudrun This is indeed referring to surgical preparation of the natural knee (in preparation for an implant). But it does indeed need the correct anatomical term here as Petra has noted.
Gudrun Maydorn (X) Jun 4, 2008:
Is femorale Gleitfläche referring to a natural knee joint or an implant?

femoral condyles

IMI sind hier die Femurkondylen gemeint, i.e. "exposure of the femoral condyles". Danach geht's dann weiter mit der Femurresektion, Tibiaresektion, Probereposition und Implantation der Prothese - sofern es sich in Deinem Fall um ein Knieimplantat handelt ;-)

Sorry, Heart - I answered in German ;-)
IMO the term you're looking for refers to the anatomical femur (=> "exposure of the femoral condyles") and not to a design feature of an implant (=> "sliding surface" or "articular surface")...
Note from asker:
Kein Problem! I got your point! You are really knowledgeable in this field.

Danke Dir, Gudrun ;-)
agree Cetacea : Absolutely right, even though it is somewhat unusual for the original not to use "Femurkondylen", too.

Danke, Cetacea - I fully agree with your remark ;-)
agree Anne Schulz : I'd vote for the "articular surface" you mentioned - that is appropriate for artificial as well as for anatomical structures, and highlights the functional aspect as the German "Gleitfläche".

Perfect suggestion, Anne - thanks ;-)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for the expertise and for noticing this term referred simply to the anatomical aspect. But thanks to the others whose terms would be appropriate in other contexts (the actual implant)"

femoral sliding surface

Quote "a femoral component to be secured to a distal portion of a femur, said femoral component having a femoral sliding surface and a convex load bearing surface provided in a rear central section of the femoral component and protruding beyond the femoral sliding surface"

agree John Dale D.D. : but most texts I have seen dont have the surface only state femoral sliding. The sliding being a "thing" on it own :-)

sliding surface of the femur

ought to be equally be suitable
Peer comment(s):

neutral Cetacea : Ought to be, yes, but "sliding surface" is very rarely used when referring to the anatomical femur.
