If your source text is British, I assume that one associates something yummy and rich and BROWN with 'Branston', since I think you are right, nothing else really would make sense.
The Branston pickle relish is 'brown and lumpy'. See web reference and pic below.
So maybe a good German equivalent would be 'Braunstein' (Mangan), which - with a little imagination - looks similar. But not as juicy. Ehem. See the brown lumpy image on below web reference.
