es ist ein schon überwundener Standpunkt

German to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Dostoievsky uses this phrase in German with respect to his work, Notes from the Underground, and he does not mean "point of view." What is your best English translation for this phrase?
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 it is an (already) outdated position
3 +1 it is an exploded idea
3 +1 it's an opinion which one has outgrown

Thank you - and notes! Thank you all so much for your assistance! We were so pleased to get these many suggestions. Dostoyevsky was quoted as having used the German phrase itself. We now understand through your input that the term is highly idiomatic. Probably there was no suitable equivalent in Russian. It was surprising to us to learn that something like typhus (the disease) or letter-writing could be "ein ueberwundener Standpunkt." We especially thought "an outdated position" worked well, and additional possibilities would be terms such as obsolete, superseded or "a thing of the past." I will award points tomorrow as suggested, but thank you all for your help!

Wenn du uns Genaueres über das Zitat verraten kannst ( wo, in welchem Konetx, ganzer Satz) schau ich mal in meiner russischen Ausgabe nach und verrate dir, was er im Original gesagt hat :-)

"Antiquated view/position" or "overcome view.." are all possibilities. But one cannot be sure without the context in which this phrase occurs. Do you have the context? You might also try this in the German/Russian or even English/Russian KudoZ forum.

Robin, this was my personal free translation to give you an idea. Try the link and ask the question there, these people are enthusiastic about Dostoievski. I do not have any idea, I have not read "Notes from the Underground" as yet.

This is what my old Langenscheidt (from 1967) says:
ein ueberwundener Standpunkt = an exploded idea / an antiquated view

or perhaps: an overcome position?

a moot point

antiquated point of view/idea, similar to what Marietta said above, would work as well....
Example sentence:

After Tom received the job he really wanted, his other scheduled job interviews had become a moot point for him.

Living with your parents until you get married is now an antiquated idea.
