French to English
Social Sciences
History
This sentence-from-hell is from the biography of an Algerian historical figure who was held captive in France and then liberated by Napoleon.
Wasn't quite sure what to put in the term field, as I'm having trouble with the whole last section (from plans profonds on), making it sound remotely English.
I am not asking for a full translation by any means, but any brainstorming you care to throw at me for any part of it is sure to be a help.
TIA

the respect received equates the regard bestowed
Not sure if that's the best way to say it but as I see it, the people give their respect in return for his kind regard.
I agree with Katsy on the translation of "où". I would say "when".
Maybe : "respect comes in return for regard"?

respect is earned from admiring eyes
at those deep levels where the turning points of Existence operate when, in the heat of debate, respect is earned from admiring eyes [and where], unbreakable bonds are forged.
Like you and others there seems to me to be either one subclause too many or not enough.

respect goes hand in hand with demeanour
Thanks Mara for the surrounding text!
I am still unsure as to whether 'le regard' is that of those looking at X, who then begin to trust and love him, or the way X looks around him (confidence inspring eyes), so I chose 'demeanour' as an attempt to get around that (i.e. one can just as easily say 'whose demeanour?'. I have also tried to be a little 'ronflant' myself.
for the rest of the sentence - I very humbly propose the following:
(from 'plans profonds')
at the depths where the Living (thing) is transformed, when, in the heat of the exchange, respect goes hand in hand with demeanour when eternal alliances are sealed". I just cannot put a "where" for that last "où". I hope this will inspire better proposals.....

some other ideas for 'le regard':
respect goes hand in hand with PERCEPTION/VISION or maybe even DISCERNMENT or APPREHENSION

a look of respect is the foundation of lasting alliances
Showed my French housemate this phrase for his thoughts. He puzzled over it for a while and then he said he thought the writer was drunk to come up with something like this! Good luck!

The way I understand the phrase is as follows: if you look at someone with respect then lasting friendships/alliances are formed.
