English translation:Main Square
Definition is right. The main square of several south american capitals is called "Plaza de Armas" (ie. Lima, Perú)

Well, they call it \"Plaza Mayor\", but the original name is Plaza de Armas. Take a look at this yahoo page. They name it in spanish and its equivalent in english:

Plaza de Armas

I wouldn't translate it if the name is still the same today, simply so that visitors can easily identify it.

The reason I say this is that I have a lot of experience of brits who complain that they can't find "Orange Square" in Marbella!

You could say, eg, "the main square and former site of the arsenal, hence its name: 'Plaza de Armas'"

good luck!
I'm off to (near) Marbella tomorrow...

Note from asker:
I absolutely agree with you, Carol, but the author of the book insists on using a Spanish expression.
