Mountain Combat Engineers
The composition of Gebirgsdivisionen and Jägerdivisionen was basically the same. Being light formations they lacked any large tank or self-propelled gun elements and tended to rely upon horsepower or foot power for transportation. This is not, however, to say that they lacked heavy support equipment, as the following breakdown shows.
Each division consisted of two Jäger regiments, an Artillerie-Regiment, a Pionier-Bataillon (engineer battalion) and Panzer-Jäger Bataillonen (anti-tank battalions) and Aufklärungs (reconnaissance) and Nachrichtenabteilungen (signals) Abteilungen (detachments). Julius Ringel's famous 5. Gebirgsdivision which participated in the Cretan operation, for example, comprised Gebirgsjäger Regiments 85 and 100, Gebirgsartillerie-Regiment 95 and Gebirgspionier, Panzerjäger, Aufklärungs and Nachrichtenabteilungen 95.

10th Mountain Sappers Expand
Role of Engineers
The 10th Mountain Division combat engineers work in teams of two while clearing the minefields. One soldier initially probes the area and then the other soldier comes in and sweeps it with a mine detector.
