I used to teach translation theory at Georgetown University. If you count linguistics, I once had over 200, but I sold my collection.

Some cable TV operators here are careless, so now and then they turn off the subtitles. In order to give you the picture, when I'm watching a movie spoken in EN and subtitled in PT, if either the subtitles or the sound vanishes, I have EXACTLY the same sensation as when I'm listening to stereo music via earphones, and it's suddenly switched to mono.
Apparently my brain has been trained to take any input attached to the question "How would you translate this?". Perhaps it's like people say about some psychologists, who can't refrain from analyzing each and every human utterance they hear.
So when I read an original book, I involuntarily and effortlessly translate it into the other language, can't stop it. When I read a translated book, if it was done either way in my language pair, I automatically back-translate it.
And no, I am NOT a simultaneous interpreter, I simply can't do it. Only once, for some 15 minutes, I was forced to do chuchotage, and I'll never do it again. For consecutive interpreting, which I do occasionally, I know hundreds of colleagues who do it much, much better. However every time I do sight translation, I see people peeking at the paper I'm reading from, trying to check whether it's really the source text, or some previously arranged cheat sheet.
Finally no, I did NOT grow up in a bilingual environment. Actually I did, but not in my working language pair. My parents spoke PT as a second language (actually the sixth or seventh they learned through their lives), PL being their first one, DE their second. While I never learned PL nor DE, they never learned any EN at all. Technically, some purists here on Proz would not consider me a native EN speaker. I began studying ESL at age 9, in the UK variant. Only when I was 23, I went to the USA, had a radical and complete variant conversion, and developed spoken fluency. Ever since, I wouldn't be able to speak or write EN-UK to save my life, if I had to. ▲ Collapse

More frightening is the fact that the profiles of all of those who have posted here in this poll today are in there, too - probably offering translation at ridiculously low rates. Input your name in the search field on the Translators page.
This is a serious crime! I hope that Proz can do something about this to protect our identities.

Does this 'translation-related books' include dictionaries or not?
If not, I have 4 to 7: including the two Saidic works, the classic by Jenner&Jenner (The Entrepreneurial Linguist), the masterpiece 'The Prosperous Translator' and then that treasure trove '101 Things that a Translator Needs to Know.' Next on the wish list are the works by Corinne McKay and Oleg Rudavin. I also have one of the classic works by Paulo Rónai, a famous Hungarian-born Brazilian translator.

I have 18 Spanish dictionaries, 45 English dictionaries, 33 of which are EnglishSpanish dictionaries, and 7 dictionaries in other languages, including Japanese, French and Dutch.
Like José Enrique, every book is related, directly or indirectly, with translation. While I don't share his ability or inclination to back translate, my brain ceaselessly threads the different readings from those books into translation, writing, reading topics that I later blog about.
By the way, I use an application called Delicious Library (for Mac only), that I use to catalog every book I own, as well as movies and CDs. If you want to take a peek, feel free to peruse:

I only have a few physical books - mostly ones for school. I don't have many directly related to translation, but I have hundreds on business management, marketing, website design, and now I'm building a collection on YouTube.

Mariel, notice that Mario's punctuation became part of the link. simple delete the " ) " from the end. The same thing happens if somebody puts a period or comma at the end of link, without first breaking it with a space.
