OK, now even I think I've seen that question before... and I haven't been around in poll forums all that much.

...but they become meaningless if they are not properly designed. Is there no one at Proz who can properly design poll questions? I've seen so many poorly designed poll questions like this one that I'm ready to vomit.

For instance, see this comment:

Ah, there are obviously different understandings of the question: I thought it meant how many clients am I working with right now - which is 5, as of this moment, with 5 jobs in my in/out box, but if it meant how many clients are you working with this year, as other people have interpreted it, that's a whole lot more... Clarification, anyone? Judging from the results, most people have interpreted it as over a longer period.

... I interpreted it as "right now", that's why I said none as I had already delivered the 4 translations scheduled for today and I had not yet received the 4 jobs I'm dealing with now (3 without a deadline, 1 for tomorrow noon). All in all this seems a good example of a Portuguese proverb that reads like "so many heads, so many minds"...

Because I am translating three chapters of a book on the modern history of Kyoto for the local university as a direct client.

I'm also in the middle of a 6-week project for a vehicle repair manual for a major Japanese automobile manufacturer that is being coordinated and handled by one of their outsourcers. Since I'm not working for the automobile manufacturer directly as the end client, the outsourcer is a customer, in fact, a very good one for me. ...

I think some kind of clarification is needed here since a translator could be working on jobs from 10 'customers' and still be answering 'None'.

I think that distinction is entirely personal, Julian.

I call all my customers customers. I don't have clients.

I know I'm in the minority here but calling them clients feels a little pretentious to me. Like calling suppliers vendors, or calling yourself a language professional

Clients are what prostitutes have.

But, Chris, in your earlier post you wrote "I have jobs from five clients on my desk right now, if that is what is meant".

I am blushing already.
