If a customer requires a job back by Monday or Tuesday next week then Sat/Sun gets factored into the equation. Sundays are not the most thrilling days to work, but you get used to it after a while. | | | Mónica Algazi Uruguay Local time: 04:02 Member (2005) English to Spanish | Martina Fink New Zealand Local time: 19:02 German to English
I do, but I try to avoid it. My partner works long hours on weekdays so I would prefer to spend my weekends with him! | | | Saturdays yes, Sundays no | Aug 21, 2013 |
I don't mind working on Saturdays, since we are able to take care of most of our chores during the week. Sundays we devote to visiting family and friends, our religious practices, and amazing naps. | |

Breaking myself of the habit | Aug 21, 2013 |
I've worked weekends for years, telling myself about the amazing flexibility of a freelancer to take time off when s/he wants; however, in fact, for me, it's turned out to mean working for 14 or 21 day stretches at a time with no time off. So as of June this year, I've been religiously keeping my weekends free. I feel like I'm on holiday! | | | Elina Sellgren Finland Local time: 10:02 Member (2013) English to Finnish + ... Because my spouse works Mon-Fri, we have weekends to spend together. And it's easier to schedule hobbies for weekends too, like dog agility, if I know that it's all FREE time... And I have so much energy after two long free days.
But if the pay is enough and the client begs nicely enough, I can do an exception, as long as it's only a couple of hours of work.

I think us Finns are used to having lots of free time. So many national holidays, 5-day work weeks, also for shift workers, long summer holidays (teachers and municipal workers have two MONTHS). So maybe we seem like slackers to some other nationalities Personally I don't think it matters that much for the economy, although we have this historical 'holiday pay' that should be abolished. ▲ Collapse | | | Yes, often... | Aug 22, 2013 |
I currently work around 15 weekends per year. I should say, however, that I really only translate at weekends because I translate motorsport (mostly rallying) press releases and reports and since races tend to take place or conclude on Saturday/Sunday, I don't have much choice!

I don't work all day Saturday/Sunday, so I do still get to my wife and two children, but my customers do of course pay me more for this kind of work, given that most of the translation is done at weekends and is generally for rapid turnaround.
Working a more or less set number of weekends also means that I hardly ever take on any other translation or proofreading jobs which would require me to work over the weekend or late into the evening and I do of course take time off or spend time with my kids at other times in the week.

I used to do that for a now defunct F1 team through an agency.
I was paid EUR0.13 in EN>FR for seasons 2004-2006, no CAT discount. As exciting as it may be, being on call every other WE, with SMS coming in telling you "release live, local version must be live in 30 min" was a bit of a bummer after a while.
Especially for Malaysia/Australia/Japan/etc. where you end up waking up Fri, Sat and Sun at silly hours.
I got greedy after 2 seasons, they got mean, and we parted. I lost around EUR200 per working WE, but got my free WEs back.
You always have the choice.
