EDRS-A: Überholmanöver im Berufsverkehr

Anders als niedrigfliegende Satelliten und die ISS, die mit 8 Kilometern pro Sekunde in 90 Minuten um die Erde rasen, geht es in der geostationären Höhe gemächlicher zu. Hier beträgt die Kreisbahngeschwindigkeit nur noch 3 km/s. Da man sich 36000 km über dem Erdäquator befindet, braucht man 24 Stunden für einen Umlauf um die Erde. Damit kommt man vom Boden aus gesehen über einem bestimmten Längengrad scheinbar zum Stillstand. Das ist sehr praktisch, da man dann seine Bodenantenne fest ausrichten kann und dauerhafte Sichtbarkeit hat.
Oft ist die perfekte Position für den Sendebetrieb aber eine andere als die für die Testphase. In so einem Fall muss man den Satelliten verschieben. Das ist auch in unserem Fall so. Die ersten Tests fanden bei 2,2 Grad Ost statt. Ab 27. Februar wurde er auf 9 Grad Ost umgesetzt. Das wird Drift genannt und dauert fast 10 Tage. In dieser Zeit können wir nicht richtig testen und haben daher eine kleine Pause.
Wir nutzen die Zeit um Liegengebliebenes aufzuarbeiten. Für EDRS-A, aber auch für zukünftige Projekte wie EDRS-C. Im Kontrollraum können wir uns in der Zeit nur zurücklehnen und dem EUTELSAT Kontrollzentrum zusehen.
Bremsen zum Überholen
Wie geht das denn eigentlich genau mit dem Drift? Die Satelliten fliegen antriebslos auf Ihren Bahnen. Sie sind dabei den Gesetzen von Newton und Kepler unterworfen.
Man geht nun so vor: Unser Satellit fliegt mit der Erddrehung von West nach Ost und soll jetzt noch weiter nach Osten. Wir wollen also schneller umlaufen. Man verringert die Geschwindigkeit durch ein kleines Schubmanöver entgegen der Umlaufrichtung. Dadurch fällt der Satellit aus der Kreisbahn in eine leichte Ellipse die etwas niedriger liegt als die Geo-Kreisbahn. Nach einem halben Tag bremst man erneut ein wenig und landet dann auf einer Kreisbahn die ein wenig näher an der Erde liegt. Auf dieser Bahn dauert der Umlauf aber minimal weniger als 24 Stunden. Daher überholt man allmählich die Satelliten in der geostationären Bahn. Mein Professor an der Uni pflegte zu scherzen, dass deshalb wohl niemals ein Deutscher Raumschiffkapitän werden könnte, da diese niemals bremsen würden um zu überholen.
Hat man nun die gewünschte neue Position erreicht, so beschleunigt man wieder und erreicht erneut die geostationäre Höhe. Ein vierter Schub korrigiert die Bahn in eine schöne Kreisform. Man kann die vier notwendigen Schübe fast beliebig klein halten, dann kann man noch mehr Treibstoff sparen, aber man muss dies aufwiegen gegen die Dauer der Aktion und die dadurch verpasste Betriebsnutzungszeit..

In der Skizze sieht es so aus als müsse man den Satelliten drehen um entweder zu beschleunigen oder abzubremsen. In Wirklichkeit sind die notwendigen kleinen Steuerdüsen auf beiden Seiten angebracht. Einen ähnlichen Vorgang muss man nämlich regelmäßig durchführen um den Satelliten innerhalb seiner Box zu halten. Dafür will man ja nicht z.B. die Fernsehübertragung unterbrechen müssen um den Satelliten zu drehen.

Durch die Notwendigkeit, dass alle Nachrichtensatelliten auf der gleichen Höhe und direkt über dem Äquator ihre Bahn ziehen müssen, ist diese Bahn sehr begehrt und heiß umkämpft. Das linke Bild der obigen Abbildung stammt aus einem Planetariumsprogramm (Stellarium) und zeigt den Südhimmel am vergangenen Donnerstagabend. Durch die Perspektive bedingt, ist ein wenig unterhalb des Himmelsäquators in orange der Gürtel der geostationären Satelliten zu sehen.
Anders als die niedrigfliegenden Satelliten sind die geostationären Satelliten zu weit weg um sie mit bloßem Auge zu sehen. Mit einem Teleskop und einer Kamera mit 10 Sekunden Belichtungszeit werden sie aber sichtbar. Da das Teleskop stillsteht, werden die Sterne durch die Erddrehung als Strichspuren abgebildet.
Das Foto in der obigen Abbildung zeigt den Satelliten an seiner endgültigen Position am Himmel über dem Längengrad von Sindelfingen in einer Höhe von 34,2° über dem Horizont in Südrichtung. Jetzt kann hier im Kontrollzentrum der Testbetrieb wiederaufgenommen werden.

EDRS-A: Passing in Rush Hour Traffic

In contrast with lower flying satellites and the ISS, which circle the Earth every 90 mintues at 8 kilometers per hour, things transpire at a more leisurely pace in geostationary orbit. At this height orbtial velocity reaches but 3 km/s. Due to the fact that one finds himself 36000 km above the equator, one requires 24 hours for one orbit around the Earth. From a specific longitude, one perceives apparent standstill. It is very useful, because a ground antenna may be permanantly placed and remain in constant visibility.
Often the perfect position for transmission lies in a different place than required for the test phase. In such cases the satellite must be shifted. This is true in our case as well. The first tests were conducted at 2.2 degree East. After the 27th of February, the satellite was moved to 9 degrees East. This is known as Drift and lasts 10 days. During this time we can't conduct any tests and therefore have a small break. We use this time to finish up the last tasks. For EDRS-A, but also for future projects such as EDRS-C. At the control room during this time we can only lean back and and watch the EUTELSAT control center.
Braking to overtake
How does this drift actually work? Satellites fly without thrust in their orbits. All the while they follow the laws of Newton and Kepler. From now on: our satellite flies with the rotation of the Earth from West to East and continues to the East. We want to move around faster. The velocity will be reduced through a small kick maneuver opposing orbital motion. Through this maneuver the satellite will depart from it's circular path in a slight ellipse, which traverses under the Geo-synchronous orbit.. After a half day a light brake is applied in order to land in an orbit slightly closer to the Earth. In this path an orbit takes just less than 24 hours. In this manner satellites are passed by graudually in the geostationary orbit regime. My professor at the University joked, that no German would every become a spacecraft captain, because he would never apply the brakes to pass another spacecraft. After the desired position has been reached, another maneuver is required to reach geo-stationary altitude. A fourth burst of thrust corrects the orbital trajectory into a perfect circle. The four necessary manevuers may be held to a minnimum duration so that more fuel may be conserved, but a compromise is necessary between the duration of the maneuver and the lost useful time of operation.

In the picture it appears the satellite must turn in order to accelerate or brake. In reality the necessary attitude thrusters are attached on each side. A similar process must be repeated often in order to keep the satellite in it's box. Of course no one wants to lose Television transmission through turning the satellite.

Due to the requirement that all news satellites orbit at the same altitude and direct position above the equator, this area is highly valued and highly competitive. The image at left in the figure above was generated by a planetarium program (Stellarium) and shows the southern sky on last Thursday evening. Constrained to this perspective, the belt of Geo-stationary satellites can be seen just under the eclipitc. In contrast to the low-flying satellites, the geostationary satellites are too distant to see with the naked eye. They are visible with a telescope and a camera with an exposure time of 10 seconds. Because the telescope is stationary, the stars are stretched into curved lines by the Earth's rotation. The photo in the figure above shows the satellite in it's final position in the sky over the longitude of Sindelfinden at a latitude of 34.2 degrees above the horizon in the southern sky. Now here in the control center the test campaign can be restarted.
