Source text - Romanian Little Stories
Little stories
Of what there is today
Of what there was yesterday
Of everything that’s about to fade
Everthing falling into misuse
The joke of the everyday
In the sweet metaphysic silence
And how could you obtain
More than a simple paradox
Filled with unhappy joys
And how could you prove
That you’re the wise blind man
The beauty and the rhythm
Of this old land
Which you wander on
From the Up Country of words. | Translation - English Mici poveşti
Mici poveşti
Despre cele de azi
Despre cele de ieri
Toate aproape de veştezire
Toate mergînd spre o tristă desuetudine
Anectodica vieţii cotidiene
În blînda metafizică a trecerii –
Şi cum ai putea să obţii
Mai mult decît un sine paradoxal
Investit cu fericiri nefericite
Şi cum ai putea să demonstrezi
Că eşti orbul care cunoaşte
Frumuseţea şi ritmul
Acestui vechi pămînt
Pe care îl cutreieri
Din Tara de Sus a cuvintelor |

Source text - Romanian Mă uit la mine
Mă uit la mine mă studiez
(O deprindere veche)
Urîtă arătare – numai poticniri
De linii strîmbe şi nefireşti
Altădată cel puţin eram tînăr
Şi acest fapt era un avantaj
De mîna-ntîi – acuma
Nu-l mai am şi nici nu mai
Pot spune: totul e în faţă
Nu mai pot spune aproape nimic
Şi stau zgribulit
Ca într-un frig perpetuu
Şi-abia îndrăznesc
Să-mi scot în lume trupul
Cel bîntuit de teamă şi de neputinţe
Mă uit la mine şi mă întristez
Şi caut disperat un gînd frumos
Liniştitor – şi nu găsesc decît
O secetă ce pustieşte totul. | Translation - English I look at myself
I look at myself I look and study myself
(An old habit)
An ugly being – only stumbling
Of wrong and unnatural curves
Some time ago I was at least young
And that was and advantage First class
Now I don’t have it and I can’t Say that:
Everything is about to come
I can barely say anything
And I stand huddled up
Like in a continuous cold
And I barely dare
To take my body outside
That’s hunted of fear and impotence
I look at myself and I get sad
I desperately look for a nice taught
Peaceful – and I don’t find but
A drought that desolates everything. |
Romanian to English: We forget about us General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Other
Source text - Romanian Uităm de noi
Uităm de noi înşine şi de frumuseţea din noi
ca de un paradis pe care zi de zi îl pierdem tot mai mult
ne înstrăinăm printre faptele noastre banale, urîte,
printre prea cunoscutele lucruri,
Spectacolul e trist
şi nici nu-l mai luăm în seamă –
La ce l-am mai reţine? | Translation - English We forget about us
We forget about us and the beauty that is in ourselves
like a Paradise that we lose more and more each day
we become strangers among our ugly, common actions
among the well known facts,
among small and grothesque people.
It`s such a routine
that we barely notice
and life begins to have a dirty, harsh crust
under which a great inferno makes noise.
They who reach the light,
are brought back into darkness – and sometimes
some of us get away and become human beings
but only from the belly up, like a centaur.
The show is sad
We begin to ignore it –
Why should we watch it anymore? |
Romanian to English: What can I expect ... ? General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Other
Source text - Romanian Mai pot s-aştept…?
Mai pot s-aştept ceva de la mine,
De la acest deşert interior,
De la pustiul care înaintează şi vine
Cu anii, şi mai pustiitor?
Mi-e sufletul ars de soarele Neîndurării.
După atîta secetă mai există ceva?
m-aş întinde plîngînd – jos la poalele ţării
Să mă legene-aşa.
S-adorm şi-apoi să învie din nou
Întreaga simţire, să-mi umple hotarul.
Aud din vechime ecou…
Şi iarăşi aud cum mă biruie harul | Translation - English What can I expect... ?
What can I expect from myself,
From this interior desert,
From the desolation that moves forward
And in time becomes more desolating?
My heart is burnt by the sun of Mercyless
After all this drought is there anything left?
I would lay down and cry
– in the country`s lap
To be rocked, just like that.
To fall asleep and be revived again
The entire consciousness, to refill my body.
I can hear an old echo...
I can hear the grace swallowing me again. |
Romanian to English: The 2nd Elegy General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Other
Source text - Romanian Elegia A II-A
| Translation - English The 2nd Elegy
I want to lean my head on your shoulder
And cry.
Cry softly, tranquil
Like the rain over the greening hillock
And I remember the years that passed
With a deaf sound
With far off trains, at night –
I was left behind
In the small, grey stations of my dreams,
I have been disapointed both
By men and things. |
Romanian to English: Emptiness General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Other
Source text - Romanian Gol
Şi iarăşi nu se întîmplă nimic
Şi iarăşi e-o indiferenţă surîzătoare
Şi un gol de hotărîri şi de-aşteptare.
Viaţa ne curge printre degete ca nisipul
Şi sentimentele încărunţesc
Alungîndu-se unul pe altul
Pe acelaşi drum al corvezilor.
Numai măritul soare din ceruri
Strigă chemări care mistuie
| Translation - English Emptiness
Nothing happens again
And there is such a smiling indifference
And an emptiness full of wantings and waitings.
Life pours itself from our hands, like sand
And the feelings get old
Pushing away one another
On the same road of uselessness.
Only the great sun from the sky
Has devouring callings |
