Travis Wright had another half hour before going on night watch, but the choppy sea below the cabin kept him from sleeping. At 11:30, he swung off his bunk and stepped into a puddle. He expected puddles on a sailboat. But this one seemed to be growing.

He lifted a floorboard, and a geyser shot up. "We've got water coming in!" he shouted. Roger Stone, 53, one of two safety officers on board with the four-student crew, sprang from his berth and crouched by him. This was no ordinary leak. Stone popped his head out of the hatch. "We're taking on water!" he yelled to Steve Conway, the other safety officer, at the tiller. "Start the engine! Douse the sails!"

What is your vision for the relationship between Liberia and the U.S.?
I hope we will continue to have a strong partnership based on mutuality of interest--that we'll be able to attract U.S. investment and that they in turn will be able to benefit from our raw materials. We hope that our success will be seen as one that has been sponsored and supported by this partnership with the U.S.
You're an inspiration to many people all over the world. Who inspires you?
[Tanzania's first President] Julius Nyerere was a person I admired very much. In today's world, people like Winnie Mandela, [Nobel Prize winner] Wangari Maathai in Kenya--these are women who are leaders in their own society. And of course, we're just watching Barack Obama. For us, it's a sea change in American political life. He's a star.
Do you intend to run for a second term?
I'm going to keep Taweh and all the other Liberians guessing. I don't want to be distracted this year while I concentrate on pushing development. The next election is October 2011. Plenty of time to make that decision.

La Netiquette es una serie de reglas de etiqueta que todos debemos conocer y seguir al comunicarnos a través de la red para una comunicación más efectiva y un mejor uso de los recursos y el tiempo. Debido a las características particulares del medio, es necesario utilizar algunos convencionalismos que ya se han establecido para poder comunicarnos efectivamente y evitar malos entendidos, ofender o ser ofendidos, así como un sinnúmero de otras cosas negativas que pueden surgir al no conocerlos.
Además del sentido común, los buenos modales, la cortesía, el respeto, la consideración y la tolerancia, estas son algunas reglas que debemos todos observar al comunicarnos a través de la Red:

Netiquette is a group of rules of etiquette that everyone should know and follow when communicating through the net for a more effective and a better use of resources and time. Due to the particular medium features, it is necessary to use some conventionalisms that have already been established to communicate more efficiently and avoid misunderstandings, offend or being offended, as well as a great number of other negative things that can come up when we do not know the other person.
Apart from common sense, good manners, politeness, respect, consideration and tolerance, are some of the rules that we must observe when we communicate through the net:
1. Always keep in mind that on the other screen there is a real human being, with his/her own ideas and feelings.
2. Keep your communications short and to the point.
3. When answering a message, leave an appointment to let people know what you are referring to, but, please, cut out everything else. Whenever possible, reply at the beginning and leave the appointment at the end.

Source text - English Everyone knows that parrots can imitate human speech, but can these birds also understand meaning?. Two decades ago, researcher Irene Pepperberg started working with Alex, an African grey parrot, and ever since then, she has been building up data on him. Pepperberg, whose recently published book The Alex Studies makes fascinating reading, claims Alex doesn’t copy speech but intentionally uses words to get whatever it is that he wants.
In actual fact, some of his cognitive skills are identical to those of a five-year-old child. Like a child’s, Alex’s learning has been a steady progression. Early on, he could vocalize whether two things were the same of different. Now, he carries out more complex tasks. Presented with different-coloured balls and blocks and asked the number of red blocks, he'll answer correctly. He requests things as well. Should he ask to sit on your shoulder and you put him somewhere else, he'll complain: 'Wanna go shoulder'.
A few experts remain sceptical, seeing very little in Alex’s performance beyond learning by association, by means of intensive training. Yet Alex appears to have mastered simple two-way communication. As parrots live for 60 years or more, Alex may surprise us all further.

Jerome (Eusebius Hieronymus), c.347-420, was a Father of the Church and Doctor of the Church, whose great work was the translation of the Bible into Latin, the edition known as the Vulgate (see Bible). He was born at Stridon on the borders of Dalmatia and Pannonia of a well-to-do Christian family. His parents sent him to Rome to further his intellectual interests, and there he acquired a knowledge of classical literature and was baptized at the age of 19. Shortly thereafter he journeyed to Trier in Gaul and to Aquileia in Italy, where he began to cultivate his theological interests in company with others who, like himself, were ascetically inclined.
About 373, Jerome set out on a pilgrimage to the East. In Antioch, where he was warmly received, he continued to pursue his humanist and monastic studies. He also had a profound spiritual experience, dreaming that he was accused of being "a Ciceronian, not a Christian." Accordingly, he determined to devote himself exclusively to the Bible and theology, although the translator Rufinus (345-410), Jerome's close friend, suggested later that the vow was not strictly kept. Jerome moved to the desert of Chalcis, and while practicing more rigorous austerities, pursued his studies, including the learning of Hebrew. On his return to Antioch in 378 he heard Apollinaris the Younger (c.310-c.390) lecture and was admitted to the priesthood (379) by Paulinus, bishop of Antioch. In Constantinople, where he spent three years around 380, he was influenced by Gregory of Nazianzus.
When Jerome returned to Rome Pope Damasus I appointed him confidential secretary and librarian and commissioned him to begin his work of rendering the Bible into Latin. After the death (384) of Damasus, however, Jerome fell out of favor, and for a second time he decided to go to the East. He made brief visits to Antioch, Egypt, and Palestine. In 386, Jerome settled at Bethlehem in a monastery established for him by Paula, one of a group of wealthy Roman women whose spiritual advisor he had been and who remained his lifelong friend. There he began his most productive literary period, and there he remained for 34 years, until his death. From this period come his major biblical commentaries and the bulk of his work on the Latin Bible.
The writings of Jerome express a scholarship unsurpassed in the early church and helped to create the cultural tradition of the Middle Ages. He developed the use of philological and geographical material in his exegesis and recognized the scientific importance of archaeology. In his interpretation of the Bible he used both the allegorical method of the Alexandrian and the realism of the Antiochene schools. A difficult and hot-tempered man, Jerome made many enemies, but his correspondence with friends and enemies alike is of great interest, particularly that with Saint Augustine.

Source text - English Thanks to the ubiquitous use of vanilla as a flavouring in ice creams and cakes the world over, its taste is more recognizable to the majority of people than the appearance of the plant.
The plant itself is actually a native of the tropical forests of Central America and is the only variety of orchid to be grown on a commercial scale. Its delicate white flowers open in the early morning and, after pollination by insects or humming birds, a narrow bean-like pod forms and ripens, taking a period of five to seven months to reach maturity. It is this pod which is harvested to provide the food crop we know as vanilla.
Despite its American origins, for decades it was only cultivated extensively on the Indian Ocean Island of Madagascar, where it was introduced at the end of the nineteenth century. It soon became clear that the vanilla grown there was of a quality unknown in other areas, and the island quickly became one of the world’s major suppliers.
In recent years, however, new competitors have entered the vanilla market and, consequently Madagascar’s importance has started to slip. Of course, the emergence of new producers means a smaller market share, whilst the development of artificial substitutes is threatening to undetermined demand for the real thing.

What they are
At the Millennium Summit in September 2000 the largest gathering of world leaders in history adopted the UN Millennium Declaration, committing their nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets, with a deadline of 2015 that have become known as the Millennium Development Goals.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world's time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many dimensions-income poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion-while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. They are also basic human rights-the rights of each person on the planet to health, education, shelter, and security.

El Proyecto Milenio fue encargado por el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas en el año 2002 con el fin de desarrollar un plan de acción concreto en el mundo para lograr los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio y revertir la extrema pobreza, el hambre y enfermedades que afectan a millones de personas.
¿Qué son?
En la Cumbre del Milenio en setiembre de 2000 el encuentro más grande de líderes mundiales en la historia, fue adoptada la Declaración del Milenio de las Naciones Unidas, comprometiendo a sus naciones a una nueva sociedad mundial para reducir la extrema pobreza y proponer una serie de objetivos a término con fecha límite en el año 2015, que se han vuelto conocidos como los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio.
Los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODM) son los objetivos con límite de tiempo y cuantificadores mundiales para tratar a la extrema pobreza en sus diversas dimensiones- pobreza por ingresos, hambre, enfermedades, falta de refugios adecuados, y exclusión- mientras que se promovería la igualdad de género, educación, y la conservación ambiental. También hay derechos humanos básicos – los derechos de cada persona en el planeta a la salud, educación, refugio, y seguridad.

I am a Uruguayan native Spanish speaker translator and transcriptor which offers my translations services from Spanish into English and viceversa. Since I was 7 years old I am studying English and this constitutes a very important advantage for my work.
Nowadays, I am studying my second year at the International House London Institute (internationally recognized) and I will get my Diploma this year. I have been doing translations since 2000 not only in my work but also as a freelancer.
