EI Nino, which means 'Christ Child' in Spanish, is the periodic easing or reversing of the trade-winds over the southem Pacific Ocean. EI Nino forms part of the so-called ENSO (EI Nino - Southem Oecillation) climate pattern in the southem hemisphere. It takes its name from a tendency to develop around Christmas. During a normal year, westward blowing trade winds force warm surface waters to accumulate in the western equatorial Pacific. These warm water evaporate easily forming the clouds that bring heavy rainfall to the sorrounding areas. The westem Pacific's atmosphere is kept warmer, since the rainfall releases heat, and directs the jet stream to flow from north Asia to California.
Atmospheric and oceanic circulation
The EI Nino phenomenon appears to be related to changes in atmospheric circulation, and in particular to a weakening of the westerly winds which drive the southern arm of the South Pacific Gyre, a near-circular pattern of cuccentr in the southern Pacific Ocean. EI Nino causes the warm surface waters that have accumulated in the western Pacific to flow back and warm the coastal waters of South America by up to two or three degrees Celsius. The consequences of such a major change in the interaction between wind and sea are not confined to the Pacific Basin. These interactions also appear to be linked to other changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation in the southern hemi¬sphere. The dramatic results of these changes are reduced rainfall in Australia, weakening of the Indian monsoons, changes in the Kuroshio Current off southern Japan, shifts in wind patterns in the South Atlantic, with consequent changes in the orientation ol coastal dunes, and droughts in south-east Asia. It even may be implicated in modified rainfall patterns as far away as Africa. In addition to affecting the onset ol mon¬soons and the frequency, severity and tracks of Pacific storms, El Nino influences the Iocation of anchovy, tuna, shrimp, and other commercial fish populations. It also affects the occurence of regional droughts, forest fires, floods, mudslides and tropical cyclones in many parts of the world. An El Nino nearly always strengthens the tropical jet stream that transports wet storms into North America, although the pattern of flow is variable. Sometimes, for example, the jet stream veers to the north, avoiding California, and other times it splits in two with the southern track drenching the state.

English to Hungarian: Tsunami General field: Science Detailed field: Meteorology
Source text - English Wind-driven waves that crash onto beaches typically have wave periods (the time taken for a single wavelength to pass a fixed point) of several seconds and wavelengths of a few to several tens of rnetres. In marked contrast the wave period of a tsunami varies from 20 minutes to several hours and its wavelength can be hundreds of kilometres long. Both length and speed depend on water depth. In the central Pacific Ocean, where water depths are 5 km (3 miles) or more, a tsunami can tcavel at 700 km/h (435 mph). Its height may be just a metre ol two, or even a few tens of centimetres, but the wavelength will be of the order of 480 km (300 miles) giving a wave period of 40 minutes. The long wavelength and low wave-height explain why ships on the open seas do not feel the passage of a tsunami. The Japanese fishing-fleet, out at sea during the 1896 Sannku tsunami, did not know anything unusual had happened until they retumed to their wcecked port and found human bodies floating in the harbour waters.
As a tsunami appcoaches the shoreline, its speed, like that of all waves, decreases because of the upward-sloping sea bottom and its wavelength is compressed. The enormous amount of energy that has been stored in the very long wavelength is transferred to wave height, with terrible con¬sequences. As wave-height rises in shallow water - in some instances, to 30 metres (100 feet) or more - the tsunami curls over to strike with incredible force. Gulfs, bays, and estuaries are the coastlines most vulnerable to tsunami. These funnel-shaped inlets focus a tsunami, amplrfyrng it into a bore - a vast wall of seawater weíghíng billíons of tonnes that crashes inland with destructive power almost beyond belief. The height of a tsunamí is measured above mean sea-Ievel and is referred to as the run-up. This regularly exceeds 10 metres (30 feet) and in rare cases - may reach or surpass 40 meters (130 feet). Although other factors are also important, higher run-ups genecally equate to greater damage. Another char¬actecistic that contributes to the destructive power of tsuna¬mi ís that they often take the form of not one wave, but a series of waves - the greatest of which may not be the first. These wave 'trains' magnify damage potentia!, with later waves breaking-up structures weakened by earlier ones and claiming the lives of those fortunate enough to survive the earlrer impacts.
Translation - Hungarian A szelek által hajtott hullámok periódusa (egy teljes hullámhossz megtételéhez szükséges idő) a tengerpartokra érkezéskor jellemzően néhány másodperc, hullámhosszuk pedig néhány métertől több tíz méterig terjed.
Mivel a partvonal közelében a tengerfenék felhajlik, ezért itt a többi hullámhoz hasonlóan a cunaminak is csökken a sebessége, hullámhossza pedig összenyomódik. Ahogy a hullámmagasság hirtelen megnő a sekély vízben - egyes esetekben akár 30 méternyire is - a hullám teteje átbukik, és aztán irtózatos erővel csap le a partra. Bár más tényezők is lényegesek, magasabb cunami általában nagyobb pusztítással jár együtt.
