I was wondering if one has to have a ProZ.com profile to post a WWA entry? The automated WWA request suggests that "If you are not registered with ProZ.com, and are willing to make this WWA entry, you just need to select a username and password to register with ProZ.com." And my suspicion is that not all non-ProZ.com clients willing to provide a WWA will be happy about having to spend their precious time to create a profile that they might never use again.

Yes, only registered users can post WWA entries May 8, 2009

According the the FAQ, only registered users can post WWA entries:

If a translator requests feedback from an outsourcer, does the outsourcer have to sign up with proz.com if they have not already done so?

Yes, currently only those who are registered with ProZ.com can make WWA entries. This decision was based on the feedback we got, based on perceived possibility of abuse, that members felt more comfortable with registration required.

This could change in the future if ways are found that happen to be acceptable to all parties

Thanks Attila and Lucia. I should have checked the FAQ. I don't quite see though how getting a username and password eliminates the possibility of abuse as long as identity verification is not required. But then again, I wasn't part of that member discussion. Anyway, thanks for your quick responses.

unfortunately yes May 8, 2009

Not that I don't agree with the rule that only registered proZ users should post a WWA entry, but for me as a new proZ user it's kind of а handicap.

Maybe I'm new on Proz, but I do have a relevant experience as a translators, which I can unfortunately not proof it here.

Patiently waiting till this rule changes

Good for Proz and the translator May 9, 2009

Dear all,

Thank you to bring up this issue.
If a client (unregistered at Proz website) gave WWA to a translator (registered at Proz website), it would be good either for the translator and perhaps the client. Dear all,

Thank you to bring up this issue.
If a client (unregistered at Proz website) gave WWA to a translator (registered at Proz website), it would be good either for the translator and perhaps the client. The client gets free promotion from proz website since their name is accessible by the whole world (free marketing for them). On the other hand, what good does it bring to Proz?

Additionally, the translator is not really in good condition to get WWA from unregisterd client. Why? I a client is not registered, who could assess that this client is real/reliable/existing? It might be come from a place that not familiar in other countries. But, if the client is registered, it should provide some information such as address, number of employee (maybe right maybe not), kinds of services and other information. This info certainly will be very useful for the next ingoing client to consider the level of service that the translator did to the clients. For this reason, I would prefer to a registered client when giving WWA.

Besides, If I join an organization, I would choose the stable, growing and beneficial one. For this context, to be stronger in the translations and alike industry, proz.com needs more supports, more participants from many parties especially from translators and translation companies/clients. By providing certain quality of translator and indicating the level of services of each translator/interpreter/editor/proofreader/etc, proz will be more prominent in online community in the world. Proz becomes growing, stable. And, as the member/registered translator in proz, it will be very beneficial for me and perhaps to other services doers. So, let become registered to the quality level of Proz.com, this is something I'm doing now.

Perhaps, this opinion can be an alternative to consider. Nice days to you all!

Outsourcers with and without Blue Board record May 9, 2009

First of all, this is the issue I have been thinking about for some time now not being sure I should bother some of my clients for the sake of getting WWA entries. So thank you for bringing this up, Marina.

I must say I am not sure the rule on being registered ProZ.com user in order to post WWA is something that should stay.

I must say I am not sure the rule on being registered ProZ.com user in order to post WWA is something that should stay.

What comes to my mind is the situation when an outsourcer, while not being a ProZ.com user/member, has a Blue Board record as entered by freelancers (two cases I know of in my language combination).

So the situation is that other freelancers may find (at least basic) contact information for such outsourcer and see other freelancers' comments (LWAs). In theory, everybody benefits from this. But still the freelancers that provided Blue Board entries might not, for various reasons, get the benefit of WWA entry.

Not sure about how outsourcers without Blue Board record should be treated...

Just my two cents...

Best regards,

Joanna

I doubt this kind of promotion would be of much help to the clients not seeking to register with ProZ in the first place. A good promotion is a targeted one, while poorly targeted promotion can even do harm (lots of unsolicited emails from job seeking translators, for example). And the clients I am talking about are just this type - not directly involved in translation business and not requiring translation services on a regular basis. For these clients, registering with translation sites like ProZ.com is pointless. Some (quite a few in fact) may even perceive it as potentially harmful. Asking for a WWA from such clients is asking for a favour, not offering a favour.

What good is it to ProZ.com? Well, if you consider translators as an indispensable part of the ProZ.com community, WWA's are a direct benefit.

I a client is not registered, who could assess that this client is real/reliable/existing?

And who is assessing it now with the registered clients? If an unregistered client provides a company name, would that not be sufficient for those interested to google that name and see if the company exists? There are other types of potential abuse, but, as I said, the fact that identity verification is not required makes it difficult to tell which WWA's are genuine and which are not for the registered and not registered clients alike.

A potential corporate membership, future use of this platform (e.g. the jobs area) by an outsourcer, more visits to this site by the outsourcer and more views of the ads, possibly an agreement between the outsourcer and the site for an ad, maybe new profiles (read memberships) for the outsourcer's employees, etc.
