English to Russian: The unbearable lightness of writing
Source text - English At the end of 2004, in the middle of december, our club discussed The unbearable lightness of being (Íåâûíîñèìàÿ ëåãêîñòü áûòèÿ) of Milan Kundera. This book was published already in 1984. 20 years already we could have read it and we could have contributed to its ‘Wirkungsgeschichte’, but for most of us it was a completely new book and we spent only 2 hours discussing it. Shame on us! And we even did not use these 2 hours to the full: we also discussed topics that were very weakly related tot the book itself: politics, economy, the German language. Shame on the discussion leader! (That is, shame on me.) Still, for some of us this book was a real revelation, and we managed to say some interesting things about it. Read and judge for yourself, whether we really said something interesting, or even better: read the book yourself, because it is full of interesting stuff.
I want to give an impression of the discussion, and will try to avoid the topics that were discussed, but had nothing to do with the book (for example, the political events, referred to in the book, should be considered minor in comparison with the philosophical and psychological themes of the work). I will not try to avoid writing my personal opinions, because the discussion did not give me good reasons to change them. 6 persons took part in the meeting. Some of us, I will not mention their names, had not read the book till the end. And that was the first topic: is it necessary to read the whole book, before you can give a well-founded opinion about it? Of course, the people who did not read it till the end thought that that is possible. Interestingly enough, these were also the people who tried to discuss all kinds of themes, except the themes of the book itself… In general, it is not a sign of respect to a great writer to not read his book till the end. It was said that we have to make choices, because we cannot read everyone and all books: when we have to choose between good and superb books, we better choose the second category. But if we doubt whether the writer in question is a great writer, how can we know when we have not read his work? With the concrete book Íåâûíîñèìàÿ ëåãêîñòü áûòèÿ it is even more difficult to do so, because much of the worth of the book comes from changing perspectives and many comparisons throughout the book, that will go unnoticed when you only read half of the book, or less.
The second topic was a comparison of the facts from the biography of Kundera with the ‘facts’ in the book, especially with the life of Tomas, the main hero. The question was not as much: which coincidences are there? but: why did the writer choose to alter some of the facts, for example Tomas emigrated, just like Kundera, but Tomas returned and Kundera did not. When thinking about this question, I get the impressoin of the writer as an almighty being: like a god, he decides what can stay the same and what should be changed. Noboby has a power like this in real life, it is the freedom and power that the writer gives himself. It gives him the chance to think through the alternatives: what would have happened, if…? This idea comes very close to one of the main ideas of the book, something a critic called ‘Kundera’s joke’ in the story structure: the heroes of the roman complain that they cannot compare their lifes with alternative lifes, because everything in life is irreversible and unrepeatable (Nietzsche’s ‘eternal return’ is not true). But now Kundera gives them, or at least the reader, this opportunity of comparison. He does so by creating 2 identical pairs and letting them do different things. The outcome differs! This ability to compare alternatives is impossible for real life persons, like you and me. It stresses the unescapable moving forward of our lifes: we cannot redo parts of our lifes, we are stuck with the choices we made. This, I would say, it what makes life so serious, so heavy, but others would say that it makes life very light instead, because ‘einmal ist keinmal’: it does not matter what you do, because you cannot do it again and thus you do not have material to compare and choose the better version.
Kundera obviously leaves much of the judging and deciding up to the reader. And on the whole the members of our club liked this way of writing. Kundera does not moralize, he does not pretend that everything is clear, especially regarding eternal questions about love, paradise, calling. And I did not have enough time during the meeting to point the next point out, so I do it now: the contrast between the different ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ characters is not so big as it first seems to be. Kundera is too great a writer to create such ‘black or white’ characters. For example, Tomas starts to think about his life and gets more attached to Tereza than to any other woman in his life, and on the other hand Tereza starts to enjoy life more, under Tomas’ influence, and near the end of the book she will dance with Tomas. Nonetheless, it is amazing how many times different persons take a completely opposite look at the same things or events, for example for Sabina parades have a very negative meaning, whereas for Franz they give his life a lot of (positive) meaning.
And finally, a separate theme of the discussion was ‘kitsch’. Kitsch is everything that is robbed from the down to earth reality. This can take place in art, but also in politics and in real life. Kundera gives some very interesting, original reflections on ‘shit’ as a religious problem, and it is tempting to add a lot of shit-ideas to his, but I will resist the temptation. One of the implications that surprised me and that I have not thought of myself (I read it in a commentary, of which there are many after 20 years), is that with the help of the kitsch-concept the traditional rejection of communism can be turned upside down: the error is not in the practice (communism is a failure, because it did not work out in practice), but in the ideal (communism excluded the reality, believed in an utopia without shit and filth).
As should be very clear by now, there are a lot of things that we did not talk about, although they are very much worth it: about the character of coincidence, about the (missing) link between love and sex, about the way of reaching freedom, about the fundamental identity of ideological parties, etc. But these are eternal themes and will not escape our attention, sooner or later.
Final question: Why is lightness unbearable? We did not answer this question fully, maybe because there is a paradox involved. We will let you break your brains on it, if you don’t mind…
As far as I know, Kundera has been born in 1929 and has not died yet. Let him keep on writing!

English to Russian: Does reading make you dumb?
Source text - English Russian is a rich language. It certainly has a great potential to call names. Right now I mention just one, very strong term from that vocabulary: ‘íåãðàìîòíûé’. Nobody wants to be called like that! Nonetheless, a lot of people do all they can to deserve that word. Literally it means: ‘without letter’, and even some students try to stay away from ‘letters’ (books, magazines) as much as they can. If you would ask them: ‘Do you want to become dumber’, they would say ‘no!’, but in practice they do not feed their brains properly and their brains will gradually vanish, in exactly the same way as you can get a slimmer body by not feeding it enough. People who do not like to read books probably would be glad to hear these words: “People who read many books do not use their own mind: they let writers think for them.” Alas, because they do not read, they do not know about this writer, the german philosopher Schopenhauer... Of course, there was some truth in what he said: you can read much and know a lot, but that does not mean that you understand it and become wiser. But basically Schopenhauer had it wrong. Not reading itself is wrong, but reading wrongly. In school you only learned to read on a mechanical level: recognizing letters, words, sentences and understanding what is said. But there are more and higher levels of reading. It is sad that schools and even university pay little attention to these levels. That is a lack in your education! That the Russian people probably were the ‘most reading people’ in the world did not make them the dumbest. But now that people are reading less and less will certainly not make them smarter. Books give food for thought. Via books you can talk with interesting people who are long dead (and this is a lot safer way than for example shamanism), books help you to get rid of prejudices (including the prejudice that everything is relative), they will save you from egoism (and from the boring phrase that the world is boring), etc.
For me a great help in reading books correctly is to talk with other people about them. For some years know I take part in a reading / discussion club. Every two weeks we meet to talk about a book, mainly the great writers of Russian and foreign literature: Chechov, Bulgakov, Pelevin, Goethe, Camus, Ðþíîñêý, etc. Everybody is free to share his point of view, but he must be also prepared to change his view if others give good reasons for that. The big questions of life are raised, and we stimulate each other to search for answers. The club is part of the CCX, the Fellowship of Christian Students. The next meeting will be about H.G. Wells, The war of the worlds
Translation - Russian
