Sixth, this study emphasizes the importance of practical intervention plan through bibliotherapy for the parents who have adolescent children with intellectual disabilities. Efforts to actively incorporate elements of bibliotherapy into counseling interventions in a traditional counseling approach have recently emerged in the field of psychotherapy abroad. Singer and Skerrett(2014) bring forward a theory which emphasizes a series of processes of writing, reading, and hearing stories of family members in a family system perspective in psychotherapy interventions. Family members do not use existing books, but they write and speak their own stories and hear stories about the lives of other members. In this process, they experience deep empathy and emotional catharsis. This is consistent with the therapeutic factors of bibliotherapy. In bibliotherapy, identification, catharsis, and hope internalization(McKendree-Smith, 2003) are important therapeutic factors. A client is identified with the character and projects his or her problem to the problem of the character to feel a sense of emancipation in the problem-solving process of the character(Gormicki, 1981). Parents of children with intellectual disabilities who participated in this study reported that they were able to express their lives through the book and to reflect on their relationship with their children and their family relations. The result of this study goes beyond the existing book-based bibliotherapy and suggests that the client can write a story of his or her own life and utilize it to find an actual, practical intervention plan for the improvement of family members’ relationship.
Seventh, unlike the therapeutic process of general bibliotherapy, the bibliotherapy experience of the parents with intellectually disabled children is unique and different, and a professional approach for the parents of children with intellectual disabilities needs to be sought. As the result of this study, participants gained opportunities of self-healing and experienced acceptance of their adolescent children’s slow growth, who remain in infancy, through bibliography when they needed. Under the circumstance of a child’s intellectual disability, bibliotherapy experience serves as a medium to safely face the difficult task of accepting children’s disabilities. Also, it provides a sense of psychological stability as well as role modeling for problem-solving(Forgan, 2002; Kim, 2015). This study suggests that the acceptance of the child’s disability must be understood from a life-span perspective which penetrates the entire life of the parents with intellectually disabled children. Depending on the development stage of the intellectually disabled children, appropriate disability acceptance task is provided in the stages of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Therefore, the usefulness of bibliotherapy which can be used as an active resource of self-care throughout the life course is raised rather than a temporary therapeutic opportunity. Bibliotherapy, in general, has a therapeutic effect in special situations such as an essential life transition or an event(Pardeck, 1998). However, for parents with intellectually disabled children, the child’s disability is not a specific event in life, but rather raises the long-term challenge and acceptance of the whole life-development perspective, suggesting that there is a need for new concepts to be applied.
