Angela Merkel faces her most serious political challenge yet. But Europe needs her more than ever
Look around Europe, and one leader stands above all the rest: Angela Merkel. In France Francois Hollande has given up the pretence that his country leads the continent (see Charlemagne). David Cameron, triumphantly re-elected, is turning Britain into little England. Matteo Renzi is preoccupied with Italy’s comatose economy. By contrast, in her ten years in office, Mrs. Merkel has grown taller with every upheaval. In the debt crisis, she began as a ditherer but in the end held the euro zone together; over Ukraine, she corralled Europeans into imposing sanctions on Russia (it’s president, Vladimir Putin, thinks she is the only European leader worth talking to); and over migration she has boldly upheld European values, almost alone in her commitment to welcoming refugees. It has become fashionable to see this as a progression from prudence and predominance to rashness and calamity. Critics assert that, with her welcoming attitude to asylum-seekers, Mrs. Merkel has caused a flood that will both wreck Europe and, long before, also bring about her own political demise. Both arguments are wrong, as well as profoundly unfair. Mrs. Merkel is more formidable than many assume. And that is just as well: given the European Union’s many challenges, she is more than ever the indispensable European.

Angela Merkelová čelí pro ni doposud nejzávažnější politické výzvě, ale Evropa ji potřebuje více, než kdy jindy.
Rozhlédněte se po Evropě a jedna vůdkyně stojí nade všemi ostatními: Angela Merkelová. Francois Hollande se ve Francii vzdal veškerého předstírání, že jeho země vede celý kontinent (viz Karel 1.) David Cameron, triumfálně znovuzvolený, si dělá z Británie malou Anglii. Matteo Renzi je vytížený komatózní ekonomikou Itálie. Na rozdíl od paní Merkelové, která se za deset let vlády povznesla nad každý zádrhel. Měla nejisté začátky během dluhové krize, ale nakonec udržela eurozónu pohromadě; i přes Ukrajinu přiměla evropany k tomu, aby zavedli sankce pro Rusko ( jehož prezident, Vladimír Putin si myslí, že Merkelová je jediný lídr Evropy, se kterým stojí za to hovořit); i přes migraci odvážně udržuje evropské hodnoty a je skoro jediná, kdo vítá uprchlíky. Tohle se začíná považovat od obezřetnosti a převahy, do prudkosti a kalamity. Kritici tvrdí, že s jejím přístupem vítání všech hledajících azyl, paní Merkelová způsobila příval, který zničí Evropu a ještě dříve způsobí ůpad její kariéry. Tyto argumenty jsou jak nesprávné, tak nespravedlivé. Paní Merkelová je více působivá a impozantní, než si něktěří připouští. A to je jen dobře: vzhledem ke všem problémům Evropské unie, je více než kdy jindy nepostradatelnou evropankou.

There’s a reason she’s been called the most powerful foodie in America: Nestle’s 2002 book, Food Politics, was the first to expose the food industry’s influence on our nation’s expanding waistlines. “In the ‘70s, people were saying that if your kids are fat, it’s your fault,” says Nestle. “But the industry markets cheap junk food to children and lobbies the government to water down its dietary recommendations.” Her goal now is to educate women about nutritional science – corn syrup is sugar, everyone! – and to inspire women to advocate for transparency on labels.

A souped-up simulator could help extend people’s driving careers, while getting the truly dangerous off the road in short order.
Mobility matters. Losing the right to drive is, for many elderly people, as traumatic as being widowed. And, as the population ages, that trauma will be felt by more and more people in the future. Yet the safety of other road users, let alone that of an elderly driver himself, is paramount. So, an awful lot rides on the licence-renewal tests older drivers face in certain places-and perhaps even more on the judgement of drivers in places that do not have them.
Normal driving tests are flawed, however. One problem is that, at the moment, licensing is usually a binary decision: either someone is permitted to drive or he is not. But this is silly. Reactions slow with age, but do so gradually. Eyesight deteriorates similarly. Some people may be safe to drive during the day, but not at night. Others may not be safe on long trips, because of loss of concentration, but would be fine pottering down to the shops. Some might be okay at low speeds, and could thus be given licences on condition their car is fitted with a speed governor. Unfortunately, neither the authorities nor drivers themselves have reliable methods of telling the difference. This cuts both ways. A minor prang or proscribed medical condition might end someone’s driving career prematurely. Alternatively, a person who should have hung up his ignition key long ago might cause a serious accident.

Našlapaný simulátor by mohl pomoci prodloužit dobu po kterou jsou lidé schopni řídit, zatímco ty opravdu nebezpečné vyloučit ze silnic rychleji.
Pojízdnost je důležitá. Ztratit právo řídit je pro mnoho starších lidí stejně traumatické jako ovdovění. Jak populace stárne, toto trauma v budoucnu pocítí více a více lidí. Přesto je bezpečnost ostatních na silnici, zejména starších řidičů, prvořadá. Tím pádem na obnovovacích testech, které se provádí v určitých místech hodně záleží, ale snad ještě více tam, kde se tyto testy neprovádějí.
Běžné řidičské testy ale nejsou bez chyby. Jedním z problémů je všeobecné vydání průkazů: buď je přidělen, nebo není. Což je krátkozraký přístup. S věkem se sice reakce zpomalují, ale postupně. Podobně tak odchází i zrak. Někteří lidé by neměli řídit v noci, ale přes den jsou za volantem bezpeční. Ostatní nemusí zvládnout dlouhé cesty kvůli ztrátě koncentrace, ale byli by schopní zajet do blízkého obchodu. Někdo zvládá řízení za nižších rychlostí, takže by jim mohl být vydán průkaz za podmínky, že by jejich auto mělo kontrolu rychlosti. Bohužel ani úřady, ani řidiči nemají spolehlivou metodu jak tyto rozdíly odlišit. Platí to na obě strany. Menší nehoda či zdánlivě závažný zdravotní stav mohou někomu předčasně ukončit kariéru řízení. Stejně tak osoba, která už dávno nemá co dělat za volantem a stále má řidičský průkaz, může způsobit závažnou dopravní nehodu.
