Ergani Maden township Explanation: "Mutasarrıflık" is a pre-republican era administrative subdivision; "township" would be an appropriate term, if you ask me... In the reference below Ergani Maden is classified as "kaza" and its administrator is indicated as "kaymakam". "Kaza" and "kaymakam" could be translated as "district" and "caimacam" as well, but given the period the book is talking about, I think "township" fits better: "...was a large village within the township of Ergani Maden..."
