I'm not sure if this is the sense or perhaps it's more like "wronged" or "suffering"

Wondering whether "soured" (= having turned bad) could get us closer to the olive here, while keeping a certain connection with the idea of continuous pain in this valley of tears. Eeer, just a passing thought anyway.
