Russian term

распускной роспускной (распускное старье)

Russian to English Tech/Engineering Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Knitting, wool, yarn
Dear PROZ.com colleagues,

My context is a contemporary historical novel, "Lozhitsia mgla na starye stupeni" by A.P. Chudakov, chapter 33; the setting is 1950s Moscow. An elderly female merchant is boasting of the quality of the socks she has knit for the narrator: "Вязано из двойной нитки, да не из распускного старья, прядено из годишной шерсти романовской овцы..." I am not at all certain how to interpret распускное in "распускное старье": does it refer to unraveling, or could it refer somehow to the character of the старье?

Thank you as always for your help!

Best wishes,
Tim Sergay

Discussion

IvanKo Nov 3, 2011:
Yes, used yarn sounds good and suitable in this context.
IvanKo Nov 2, 2011:
the narrator is talking about "unknit old things (clothes)", there should be some English name for that, I will try to google for some time and maybe will come up with an idea.

Sorry, I should have made it clear:
"да не из распускного старья" - "Not unravelled from some old knit garment".
Of course, распуксной means unravelled.
Peer comment(s):

agree LanaUK : unravel ( a jumper for inst.) to recycle the yarn

old stuff unknit

This refers to the old stuff (i.e. outworn jackets and other similar ones). The person concerned gathers old things and unknits them to make up thread enough for knitting new things
