Russian term

совершилось ужасное

Russian to English Science Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) ornithology
Контекст: "Пока ученые уточняют таксономический статус закавказских журавлей, совершилось ужасное - убили одного из журавлей новой формы."

Вроде все просто, а красиво не складывается. Помогите оформить, спасибо.

something abominable/ghastly/horrific has occurred

Just a couple of alternatives. "Terrible" has become so weakened that "Something terrible has happened" often means no more than that you forgot to save the changes in your document or you've been overlooked for promotion again. Of these suggestions, I like "horrific" best -- it seems to still retain connotations of terror.
