Discussion

Mark Robertson Jun 28, 2011:
Charter in and out? A Charterparty (or Charter Party) is "a contract whereby a ship, or part thereof, is let to a merchant for the conveyance of goods on a determined voyage to one or more places" The primary parties to a charterparty are the shipowner and the charterer.
Andrew Bramhall Jun 27, 2011:
Charter-in and out Unfortunately they also have the disadvantage of being unidiomatic and largely unused.
Douglas Bissell Jun 27, 2011:
Charter-in and out also has the advantage of being much clearer than many other terms, although they may be perfectly correct

Selected

1) Afretador - Charterer; 2) Fretador - Shipowner (or Owner)

These are the standard terms used in the various BIMCO standard form Charterparties and in the New York Produce Exchange Charterparties. I am sure of this because I used to teach Maritime Law. Cf. "Carriage of Goods by Sea", John F. Wilson

Shipper is an alternative translation for afretador.
Note from asker:
Much clearer than the gramatically correct Affreighter and Freighter. Thanks.

A charterer may also be a party without a cargo who takes a vessel on charter for a specified period from the owner and then trades the ship to carry cargoes at a profit above the hire rate, or even makes a profit in a rising market by re-letting the ship out to other charterers.
